Instead, Shelley should have insisted on going together with Mishti to her cousin since Mumu is a stranger to her and besides why should they confront Mumu fully knowing Mumu might be against their union. 

Same-sex marriage is largely frowned upon in many societies and making a choice in the first place should give them the courage to fight as being together and not confined in the world outside of them.

And furthermore, Shelley should have been cautious not to get drank upon not finding Mishti at the scene less to reveal any secret under the influence of the alcohol.
