Words Unsaid

Words Unsaid

Peeping out of her drawer were some bits of paper,

Urging her to touch and read them again;

She sighed and turned her head to savour,

The words that she had found so hard to pen.

Memories came flooding back, of the warmth they had shared,

Carefree days when the world outside was still at bay;

Her heart skipped a beat to think of how they had dared,

Disturbing murmurs and even sly looks had not made them sway.

But the society in which we live is a cruel place to be in,

Where judgement and intolerance dictate the norm;

Crescendo of voices, they took it in on their chin,

Together they thought, they could brave the storm.

How naïve were they? she thought now,

Different faith betrothals could never be;

To be together would be difficult to sow,

Separate they must, was the elders decree.

Prised apart, they had sought their different paths,

The letters she wrote sat un-posted in their silken bag;

Pouring out her love in draft after draft,

Priceless they were, with no price tag.
