The History of Anandpur Sahib

The History of Anandpur Sahib

Earlier Guru Teg Bahadur lived in Kiratpur

But due to troubleshoot Ram Rai- the elder

Son of Guru Har Rai and the other sects of Sikhism, he moved to village Makhowal on

The edge of Shivalik hills and near river Sultej

He purchased this land from

The hill chieftain of the state of Bilaspur.

Bilaspur was also known as Kahlur state

Ninth Guru founded the village in 1665

Chakk Nanki after the name of his mother

After the martyrdom of the month Guru

Guru Gobind Rai renamed the town as

Anandpur . At the age of eighteen years

Guru Gobind Rai felt the need of Nagar

A war drum and a Nishan- a saffron flag

He used to go on hunting expeditions

And the sound of Ranjit Nagara echoed

In the surrounding Shivalik mountains

People got scared and the border security

Of hilly states got alerted due to this sound

Dashmesh Pita wanted to drive away

The fear from the minds of the people

Who had become timid and weak

He wanted to make them strong and daring

To resist the oppression of Mughal emperor

By 1680s Guru's power and influence had Increased immensely and noticeably

Devotees from far and wide presented him

With valuable gifts.  A Prasad elephant and

A royal canopy being the most coveted ones

This Anandpur is the auspicious place having

The honour of being the birthplace of Khalsa

On the Baisakhi of Vikrami year of 1699, here

Khalsa Panth- the pure way of life was founded which is now Gurudwara Takhat Sri Keshgarh
