Before the moon

It was night 

soft clouds sinking into the dark 

I held her hand under the moonlight 

minutes in slow motion 

the glitter in her eyes 

held my heart 

The night grew darker 

when my phone beeped 

we looked at each other 

for we knew what it meant 

I let go her hand, 

before the moon was gone

promised to be back 

I put on my army uniform 

India my first heartbeat

the second was her 

she said nothing

but her eyes said it all 

the smile through her tears 

broke my heart 

just god knew 

if I would see that smile again 

just god knew 

if I would hear our child's first cry 

she was expecting 

the courage in the proud mother 

telling me it would be okay 

made me stronger than anyone could ever be

in any way
