It was an unexpected call. The voice sounded feeble but oddly familiar.

"Hello " She said.

No reply. Maybe the other person was unable to talk.

"Hello". She replied again.

" Hello" came a slow, faint reply. She recognised the voice in a fraction of a second.of course,It was him. How could she forget that voice ?

"What?

 What happened?

"Are you alright? "

"Why are you sounding so low? Where are you? "

Her voice was choked with emotion and she could barely speak. . She was worried he was unwell or in some danger. Tears flowed down her cheeks in torrents. Gone was all her anger and her hatred towards him in a moment. All she wanted was him to be safe and alive, wherever he was. She said a silent prayer for him. She wanted nothing more, nothing less. Nothing else mattered anymore!

Theirs had been a great relationship or so she had thought but sadly, it had turned out to be a total disaster after the few initial years of marriage. Finally, better late than never she had realised it was not meant to be.Maybe all marriages are  not meant to be great successes though no fault of either spouses. Maybe marriages are always made in heaven but sometimes broken on the Earth.

Right from day one, things were always being  portrayed the wrong way. Anu was the object of ridicule for every small error. She was taken to task in front of everyone and looked down upon in every possible way.It was too much for a self respecting woman like her. What  hurt more was his so called silence! It broke the chord of affection even before it developed .Slowly she withdrew into her shell and could never fully bare her soul  unto him. For the most important factor of trusr was missing. The unrealistic expectations of in laws, lack of domestic help, big joint family, demanding career, lack of privacy, limited conversation, financial constraint, the entry of kids and above all the lack of mutual affection and respect in their wedlock all took their toll and before they realised ,finally they had drifted miles apart .For Anu, it was of course the end of her world for whatever it was,she had given her 100%, her whole life into it. But she slowly realised that she was holding onto thin air. It was better to let go the pretense and give the children a strong  home with good vibes instead of a false, unwanted and unsteady home. It didn't happen overnight. It took almost fourteen years to accept the reality and move out of it. Her children were the only blessings from this emotionally , physically ,financially draining relationship. Once they were  separated, she never looked back. Neither at him nor his family members but she never stopped her children from meeting them, because that was in the best interest of both.

And now after so many years this call. Immediately, she sent the boys out to him and got him admitted into a good hospital. He was down with Corona and had to be put on the ventilator at once. Her heart bled when she saw him on the bed, struggling to breathe in the ICU. She would have never wanted to see him in this condition. She wouldn't wish this for her worst enemies!

She remembered the humiliation and despair she had gone through after the divorce. The comments by relatives and neighbours. The branding by one and all. She was being made to feel like the culprit.Though no fault of hers. People were quick to judge and pass judgements without knowing The whole story. Those were the days when I wished I would die!The hell the kids had been through.Their confusion. The tantrums they had put up.Both were teenagers at that time and were going through a difficult phase as such. The depression that she had sunk into. That which something died in her forever. That void was still the same....Time did not heal it. She had neen blamed for no fault of hers. For taking a stand. Just because he had fallen out of love, rather fallen for someone else! And had conveniently hidden the facts for almost a decade. That was the worst part but slowly it had sunk in. In fact, maybe that helped her get over him a little faster.  Either he was an actor par excellence or she was too naive. Maybe she was but she didn't want to accept it. She was too scared it might be true!

But now was not the time to think about all this. Immediately she picked up her purse, adjusted her dupatta  and rushed towards the door. To go to the hospital. All was forgiven but not forgotten. Strange is the way a woman loves and stranger is her way of forgiving. This she would have done for anyone, any other human being on this planet!
