'Again, you're brooding over something, Pat,' his mother Rakhi called out with concern .' I don't brood, mom, I just dream, dreams of happiness,', replied Sampat in retaliation. Sampat or simply Pat was in the habit of daydreaming. In his dreams he could travel to many years back to his early childhood. He could recall events vividly that had occurred in and around his childhood self. Pat did never get bored. His friends got bored easily if they had no games to play or no school to attend. But Pat went back many years and enjoyed the Happy events of those yester years when he felt he was getting bored.
Now just ten years old, Pat seamlessly travelled to the life when he was just four years old. But as he was growing, his power of concentration was becoming stronger and expanding in domain. He now travelled in his thought to periods more than a decade to period before his present birth into his earlier life.
Pat peeped into his earlier years and could recollect what his favorite spots were. Where he sat down under which tree in the garden and browse through his picture books on history. One of his friends had stolen his favorite book on the Mughal Rulers of Bengal , however Pat had successfully retrieved it before it left his house.
Many years passed. Now Pat is a grown up man. He is now working. He is working in a government department and his work load is quite light. So he gets quite some time to dream. Day dream, his favorite past time. He soon found ways and means to squeeze out time from his fixed schedule. In the time he managed he used it to dream and dream which he enjoyed.
One day while dreaming, Pat had gone back about a hundred years. This was the first time he had gone back so many years. He was somewhere living in the western parts of the country. The scene was a post office and Pat was an employee there. He was working as a postman. After sorting of the letters he would take the letters in a big sack and carry it on his back for distribution. Sometimes he was given a horse for reaching his destination and other times he would simply walk as there was no cycle those days. By distributing letters, he would come in contact with so many people. Almost everyone knew him. On his part he was getting familiar to the names and their addresses.
While on his rounds in this postman's life he had encountered a man who like him could go back and recall events of the past. The two became friends. This new friend of his told him that he had known him in his previous life.
According to this new avatar of Pat this new acquaintance and he had been working in the treasury of the famous Jagat Seth, the financier of the East India company. Then during the Battle of Plassey they had ran away together by taking substantial amount of gold coins from Jagat Seth's treasury. They were finally caught and hanged after indicted by a kangaroo court . But the gold they had buried at a place where the river Ganges takes a bend near Murshidabad.
This new avatar of Pat, the postman and his new found friend went to Murshidabad in search of the gold. They found the river bend and started digging to search for the gold. But later they found that the river had switched course and had swallowed much of the land and the gold must have been lost in the river belly. The friend of Pat's avatar then accidently slipped and fell in the river and was lost forever. Their adventure ended in tragedy.
Pat was suddenly woken rudely from his day dreams. He found his boss standing in front of him. ' We are starting a new department of gold assessing in our office as per the government new circular. We have decided that as you are under worked so you must take charge of this section. You will be given training before you start. So now, please check all inventory and infrastructure and submit your report. ' his boss concluded in haste.
The multi layered time travel of Sampat came to an end abruptly. Very sad for him.
