He kept on trying but the coveted government job remained elusive. He studied really hard as there was stiff competition. The groundwork Tuhin knew had to be done with many years of hard labour. There were many hurdles to overcome. The individual merit was not the only criterion . The written exams were where the questions were set to check not only your knowledge and wisdom but your stupidity also. The system wants to know how gullible you are. Then the interview was such that if you were an astrologer you would be better equipped to face the questioner. So there were other factors also apart from luck and knowledge.
At that time Tuhin just the college pass out was a honest patriotic law abiding citizen and ignorant of the knowledge of gaming the system.
The main drawback for Tuhin was money and it was the lack of it. There were people at every door step at every nook and corner of the administration sitting there with greasy palms. Each and every one was waiting eagerly like the patient junglee hunter of the forest aiming to pounce on the hapless prey.
Tuhin had not yet gathered the correct source for the deposit of the money and the quantum of it which would guarantee him the elusive job. No one would let him know the details of the labyrintine layer of the money making machinery fearing transparency would bring the doomsday for the booming unholy business.
Not that Tuhin was averse to the concept of cash for job. But he had to know the genuinity of the source of corruption that would finally lead him to the coveted job and from where there would be no claw back. Because the money supply from his sources was limited. If he exhausted his source then he would have no recourse to it ever again. Also the onus of replenishment of the source was his responsibility. So he must act with care and caution.
Tuhin also had to identify the job he would get if it was a cash cow or not. Because he had to break even at the earliest with the help of multiple source of income besides his regular salary. So the endless chain of money laundering would keep rolling on and on and the system would be happily running along.
Tuhin had taught himself that money making and corruption was a taboo and lawlessness for the poor and deprived . Whereas only the rich and powerful had the right and access to the tools of money making and wealth generation. Any offence on their part was not questionable in the eyes of law.
Finally Tuhin got to the source by which he could secure a basic job. The work of a sweeper in the local thana. This did not require any competition only the source of job appointment needed identification. A graduate by qualification Tuhin started his career by sweeping the floor of the Police Station. He could not sit down and cry over it and be unduly emotional. Just paying a basic token money of few lakh rupees would be sufficient.
Tuhin had now become a part, a minor spoke in the hub of corruption of the system. He had to just grease the necessary source and the desired job would be his. After working for few years he had accumulated enough money to apply for the post of a constable.
After becoming a traffic constable, Tuhin knew that he had become a part of the money making machine. He could stand at the nakah or crossing and just keep his palm open skywards. Every passing commercial vehicle would pass by and fill his palm. The income would be more if some errant driver was adamant in not paying. Then several hefty fines would be slapped on him and his vehicle. If the fees remained unpaid then the vehicle would be unable to ply on the road leading to a stoppage of his business activities.
No court would easily admit the driver's plea or if admitted then the driver would not know when his case would get a hearing. So it would be prudent to go for an out of court settlement. Then there would be lot of bargaining and by the end Tuhin would be many times more rich than his salary.
So everyone was happy, the 'law abiding' citizen, the law, Tuhin and his bosses. No one from the press reported the misadventures of Tuhin because they knew it would not attract eye balls. No eye ball attractions means low TRP and low TRP meaning lack of sponsorship or low revenue generation. The whole system runs on money pure cash and this realisation was dawning on Tuhin.
So Tuhin was happy with the present situation and didn't feel the guilt if he was branded a Dishonest Cop. The question of 'Dishonest' was purely relative. Tuhin had already shaken off this stigma long ago or the system made him shed it. The earlier he got rid of it the lighter his baggage would be as Tuhin educated himself. Because now he was an eligible bachelor in the marriage market and daughter's parents were willing to give their daughter in marriage to Tuhin. The daughter's father knew that their son in law Tuhin being a government employee would retire with a pension apart from other terminal benefits leave alone the life long earning from countless sources. As they knew it was not far when Tuhin would become the In charge of a Police station, the ultimate money multiplier . Then no amount of expense could make a dent on his salary which was happily basking and resting in his bank account and earning cumulative interest and growing exponentially only to find it's way out when regular job life ended
