Ronit had just recovered from a long illness. He had jaundice. For two months he had been suffering from this dreadful disease. Many people are known to have succumbed to this disease due to lack of proper treatment or due to delayed diagnosis. Ronit's body had changed colour and had become yellow more of an amber appearance.
Ronit was a government official working in the human resource department. He was doing a project under disaster management programme and was studying the effect on the life and livelihood of tribal people when they are hit by natural calamity . The tribal areas in Central India was situated in heavily wooded hilly region where penetration of human development effects are low. Even after so much progress, many people lived primitive lives as compared to the modern world and it's living. Basic amenities like availability of drinking water was a luxury in many areas. Ronit also faced this problem. People had to buy drinking water that was transported there on motor tankers from nearby urban areas. There had been a strike of tankers recently as their demands were not being fulfilled. So water supply was disrupted. Availability of drinking water became scarce and costly.
Ronit had to survive on rationed water. Due to unavailability of adequate drinking water, Ronit had to go without it for many weeks. As a result his body got the jaundice and acquired the amber colour.
His employers worried over his health recalled him and sent him on Medical leave till he completely recovered.
During his convalescence period, Ronit missed his adventurous life in the spartan tribal region, so he made a resolve to return to his place of work despite it's challenges. His family resisted but Ronit was adamant and would go back.
As per need and demand of the current situation , Ronit made more arrangements and decided to fight all diseases with an iron will and a determined mind and body.
This time there was another challenge looming ahead for Ronit. Due to the good effects of the Project Tiger, now the population of tigers in the reserve forests was on the rise. So some of these tigers were straying away from the jungle to other semi urban areas in search of food.
Ronit was returning to his work area in the tribal belt inside thick jungle. From the last motorable point in the jungle, Ronit had to walk the Final lap to his workplace on foot some ten kilometers interior . Generally, he has assistance of some known tribal people to accompany him on this last leg of the journey. Presently also he was being accompanied.
But after going half the way, his guides informed that a tiger who had strayed away from the reserve forest was reported to be using this same forest trail used by humans. So extra caution is needed to avoid become the lunch and dinner of the beast.
Results would be ready for the happening was lazily not thought about. Little did any of the foot soldiers of Ronit and himself know that danger was eagerly waiting for them round the corner. There was some trampling sound from the nearby undergrowth on the ground. Everyone thought it was just a common sound emanating from the jungle. Just then a jungle bird gave a loud shriek and bundled away and disappeared. From somewhere close by a low growl could be discerned but the owner of the voice couldn't be identified. The jungle animals were aware it seems of a lurking danger. The tribals accompanying Ronit were also showing nervousness. Ronit was also feeling an uneasiness within but was undecided on his next course of action. Then all of a sudden a huge bundle of a glowing amber coloured object sprung out of the nearby bush. Seeing it everyone ran helter skelter. In a few seconds, Ronit was alone facing the amber coloured object. It was a grown up adult tiger. Ronit was staring into it's eyes and got mesmerised by it's sheer build. Many months ago a tribal had brought to him an orphaned tiger cub few weeks old. Then Ronit and his man Friday both had nursed the cub like a foster parent and help it survive. The tiger cub had gone away from them after few weeks of care and nothing was heard of it later. Everyone had forgot about it.
But now this was a real menace. How to tackle a full grown tiger. In a fleeting moment of thought Ronit had done all the thinking while being on panic mode. Then he collapsed and knew nothing.
Later on when he came to himself he found the tiger lying peacefully near his feet and sleeping quietly.
Luckily for Ronit a group of tribal villagers were peeping curiously through the jungle foliage and were contemplating their course of action while a bunch of forest officials also accompanying them, all thinking a plan to rescue Ronit.
Before anyone could take any action, the tiger got up licked Ronit's feet, gave a low growl and quickly disappeared in the jungle.
Ronit was relieved but could understand the love the tiger showed towards him probably as a debt towards saving it in it's childhood and bringing it up against all odds . Animals can show their gratitude in innovative ways unthinkable to man, that's the summary of thought by Ronit. This story was narrated by him.
