Ek chutki sindoor ki keemat tum kya jaano

eeshwar ka aashirwaad hota hai ek chutki sindoor,

suhaggan ke sar ka taj hota hai ek chutki sindoor,

har aurat ka khwaab hota hai ek chutki sindoor

Huge applaud and the audience goes ga ga over the scene in the movie. Well another emotional drama!

As we leave from the movie hall, an old Aunty caught me introducing herself as our neighbour from my home town. She came to Delhi to stay with her Son and DIL.

Wow! Payal. How are you.

I took a while to recognise her but answered her respectfully. Yes Aunty, long time. How are you.

I am ok beta. Just came to spend few days with my beta and Bahu. They insisted me to come to movie with them.

Ohh good Aunty ji. You also have some fun time.

What fun beta.. I came so that my new DIL won’t poison my son’s ears. I have to keep an eye on her na.

I was dumbstruck with her thinking and free attitude with what she was telling me.

Are you still married? She asked.

Yes I replied! Why are you asking me?

Well neither you are wearing Sindoor nor Mangasutra. You don't look like a married one. Said Aunty.

Hamare zamane mein toh bichiya, bindi, ye Lal lamba Sindoor aur Mangalsutra ke bina ladies koi din nahi rehti thi aur aaj kal ….girls don’t believe in all this. See my DIL. She is wearing everything. I won’t let her go out without any of these. Kalyug hai Kalyug.

I was still in dilemma what to reply and how to make the older generation understand.

I still believe in our customs and traditions but this should not be treated as obsession rather as one’s personal choice.

Is this really important for a woman to turned into mannequin wearing all kinds of jewellery and long red sindoor to prove her love and loyalty towards her husband.

No Aunty, I don’t do all this on daily basis but of course on special occasions I do, so that I feel different and to adorn myself. Is it wrong something in it?

My husband is totally fine with this choice and acceptance.

The Aunty muttered and left giving me an unacceptable look.

I reached home and that conversation still hovered my mind, that. I matter how liberal or free minded you become, society points out married women who do not choose to wear sindoor in public or private domains. These accessories have heavy religious connotations, and through time have become important check-marks for Indian uncles and aunties in their requirements list. But the modern Indian woman isn’t about that life.

Damn!! It is the Sexism that only women are suppose to wear the validity of their marriages and men have no such rules.

Well I am not at all anti Hindu culture or traditions but it’s just why it’s only for women?

Well, I and my husband had already decided how to move further in our marriage with how much amount of customs or tradition and to what extent will be the freedom. Love, trust and respect will be infinite from both sides.

”Bade bade shehron mein aisi chhoti chhoti baatein hoti rehti hain, Senorita.'”
