THE GRUESOME CRIME

COIMBATORE, TAMILNADU

A 19-year old Gobika was studying her third year course in Bachelor of Commerce. She was staying in a room nearby her college and it is separate for men and women. Her house was little far away from the college. So she decided to stay in the room, which she bought in Alandurai and it is just three kilometers the college, where she is studying. Even though she was staying in the accommodation, once a week she will go to her house and stay there for one or two days and spend time with her parents and come back to college as soon as the week days start.

Gobika’s parents had two children and she is second. She belongs to Hindu. When it is going like this, they decided to arrange marriage for her elder brother. Her friend Adhithya also waited for a right point of time to confess his love to her despite knowing that, her parents won’t approve their marriage citing caste differences.

But exactly before a month from this, on April 2015, Gobika, as always, finished the work in her college, and when walking to her room, Rahul came and started talking to her. When talking like that, both of them exchanged their phone numbers, and for the next month, both of them started talking on the phone everyday and went into a relationship.

Rahul is Adhithya’s close friend in the college. This new relationship is not known to Adhithya and Gobika’s family. That’s when Gobika came to know that he is a drug addict and chain-smoker with the help of Adhithya(during a casual talk). Since, he had been close to the gang for two years. Seeing the evidences and proof, Gobika becomes heartbroken. Without telling anything to him, she ends her relationship with Rahul. She doesn’t tell Adhithya the truth that, she was in a relationship with Rahul.

Rahul also agreed to that. But, he asked for a goodbye kiss. For that Gobika thought that they were going to be separated and nothing is going to happen because of this innocent request. So she told Rahul to come to the room where she was staying despite Adhithya’s warnings.

12 MAY 2015

The time is exactly 11:30 at night and it was raining heavily outside. Rahul came to Gobika’s accommodation room. The design of this room is, there were many separate rooms in a compound and there will be a separate section for women and men and between the se top there is a big gate. It will always be locked.

So when Rahul came to the girl’s gate, Gobika came near the gate and she unlocked the gate. She took him to her room. Since everyone has separate rooms in the accommodation, there will be no one else in her room except Gobika.

Now both of them were talking for a while in Gobika’s room and she explained her situation to make him understand his bad habits. At a point, Rahul asked for a goodbye kiss. Then both of them started kissing. While kissing he started removing Gobika’s dress. Now, Rahul doesn’t need just a kiss.

Gobika understood that he wanted to have sex with her. Right away, she stopped by saying she was not interested in it. Because of this situation she might become pregnant. And at home, they have fixed her brother’s marriage. So she asked Rahul to leave.

Because of this sexual rejection of Gobika, Rahul felt very shameful. He was terribly angry. Immediately he came out of the room. When he went out, he stood in an area between the girl’s room and boy’s room, and started smoking cigarette. That’s when, two of them came.

A 20-year old Janakiraaman and 21-year old Nagoor Meeran. Both of them are studying in the same college and they were staying in the men’s dormitory.

So those two people came there and asked Rahul: “What are you doing here at this time da?”

He said: “I was in love with a girl in our college da Sanjay. But now our relationship has come to an end.”

All three of them started talking for a while. At one point, both of them asked to see his girlfriend and asked him to take them to his girlfriend’s room. Now all three of them started moving slowly towards Gobika’s room and there they stood in front of her room.

 Even they couldn’t believe that, the door was open. Because, Gobika went to sleep without locking her door.

All three of them opened the door and went inside the room and saw her sleeping in her night dress. Now both Janakiraaman and Nagoor Meeran, recognized that, this girl is the one who is studying with them. Nagoor was studying in the same department in the same college where Gobika studies.

He had interest in Gobika. So he got her mobile number from another girl Sabhana who studies with her in the same class and sent messages many times. But she didn’t reply to any of those message. This has already caused a great anger to Nagoor.

Sanjay Kumar also knows who Nagoor is. What he said is, “Many times in many places, Gobika humiliated him by telling that he have an ugly face.” Now all three of them were looking at Gobika, who was sleeping there.

Then Nagoor took a pillow from the side and pressed it into Gobika’s face. Now Gobika, who was sleeping was being awakened and without knowing what is happening to her, she started moving her hands and legs.  

Now Nagoor started punching Gobika’s face faster. At the same time, Janakiraaman grabbed her arms and legs from moving. Then both of them called Rahul, who was looking at them and asked them to bring a knife from somewhere.

Right away, Rahul also searched for a knife everywhere. But the knife is nowhere to be found. So he came out of the room and started looking where to find a knife. But when he was looking like that, he saw a hoe in the garden outside. When he took it and returned to the room, he saw the pillow on Gobika’s face is covered in blood.

Looking at Rahul, Nagoor said: “Hey. Beat her with the iron part of the hoe da.” Now Rahul raised the hoe above his head and hits Gobika. Now, she stopped fighting back. When Rahul was guarding to see if anyone is coming, both Janakiraaman and Nagoor started to rape her by removing her clothes fully.

After completing it, they said Rahul: “Now, it’s your turn.” Rahul then went and raped Gobika. But, he stopped in between after he realized that: blood was coming from her face. It spoiled his mood. So instead he crazily bites her chest, leg and thigh.

After this, Nagoor took the hoe and inserted it in Gobika’s private part. Since it didn’t go inside further, he kicked the iron part and pushed it heavily inside her.

When he kicked it, that hoe went 90 percent inside her body. Until then Gobika was alive. But after this, since it damaged her internal organs, she died in few minutes.

After killing Gobika, they washed all the blood in their body. After that they stole some things from her room. Then they also took her mobile phone. After that they took all the clothes in the room and piled up over Gobika, who was lying dead on the bed. Because even if Gobika’s body smells rotten in the next few days, it should not come out.

After that, they came out of the room and locked the room and quickly escaped from there without knowing that they are leaving a lot of evidence at the crime scene. As it rained a lot that night, nothing was heard outside that room.   

Gobika didn’t come to college for three consecutive days. Her friends- Sanjay, Adhithya(particularly) and Mridula got suspicious, meanwhile. They thought that she might be sick. So Adhithya reluctantly called and texted her due to the request of Sanjay.

But there is no reply from Gobika and she didn’t answered the call.

“Gobika is not this type of girl.” Adhithya thought and he went to her room to check. When he went and looked, the door was locked. With the help of Sanjay, they knocked on the door. But there was no reply.

Adhithya got suspicious, and broke through the door and entered the room. As soon as he entered the room a horribly rooting smell came. When he saw around the room, Gobika was not there. But at the corner of that room, over the bed, a lot of clothes were piled up. That scene Mridula saw when Sanjay and Adhithya moved the clothes, was an unforgettable scene in their life. She was naked and a hoe was inserted fully on her private part. Gobika was lying down dead. A very gruesome crime scene.

Police Inspector Dayalan came to the crime scene immediately and Gobika’s body was taken for autopsy. The cause of death was reported to be as massive internal bleeding. The handle of the hoe was 60 centimeter inside her body and was kicked with terrible force.

The handle of the hoe, that went in a high force, damaged Gobika’s heart, lungs and other organs instantly. Because of this, severe bleeding happened in the internal organs and she died on the spot. The doctors showed the X-ray report to Dayalan, Adhithya and Gobika’s family members on the screen.

Showing the sheet, the doctor said: “Look till where the handle went. We cannot even imagine how Gobika felt in that situation.” Everything was taken from her body including saliva, fingerprints, bite marks, semen, etc. Soon after this news came out, all the other women who stayed in her accommodation room, vacated immediately as there’s no safety there.

Immediately Dayalan started the investigation. He started tracing Gobika’s mobile phone. On the night of the incident, both Nagoor and Janakiraman were roaming near the accommodation room, the late night. Dayalan came to know about it when he inquired Adhithya, Sanjay and Mridula. 

So when Dayalan and his team caught both of them, inquired and searched their rooms, they saw blood stains on their dress. When he checked the blood stains, it was confirmed that it was Gobika’s blood. All three were arrested in the next few days.

When Dayalan asked him: “Why did you do like this da?”

Each one of them gave a different reason.

Rahul said: “She told me that she disliked my bad habits and loved that useless Adhithya. When I took advantage of her that night, she said no and that’s what made me angry sir.”

While, Janakiraaman said: “Gobika was always rude to me sir. She humiliated me many times.” Then, Nagoor said: “Gobika didn’t reply to any of my messages. She made me angry by ignoring.”

“So, we decided to kill her together.” The guys said to Dayalan. Their DNA was a perfect match which was taken at the crime scene.

After that the police to these three people, asked them to re-enact what had happened and it was broadcasted lively on television despite oppositions from the ruling party. Because amongst the two accused, one is a known person to their party men. While, the other guy is a Muslim.

Seeing this, all the people started to rage in anger and started protesting to give death penalty for all three of them. In 2016, the case started in the court. What happened to Gobika was explained in detail by advocate Sowmiya in the Supreme court of Delhi and the evidence was also provided.

When it was read in the court, Gobika’s mother Savitha was also there and all the small details which happened to her daughter, was read in the court room and she began to cry.

Then, she saw the advocate Nawaz Sharif, who was present in support of the three murderers and asked him, “Whether you have any conscience? They have killed my daughter so cruelly, how can you support them? Are there no girls in your house? If anything like this happened to the girls in your home, will you come and support them?”

She further asked, “How can you sleep peacefully every night?” But there is no reply from that advocate. Finally the court gave death sentence to Janakiraaman and Nagoor after the Indian Prime Minister and Home Minister rejected the convict’s plea to cancel their death sentence.

Rahul was also proved to be guilty. But he was only given 10 years of imprisonment. This caused a lot of anger among the people. A lot of people started gathering to the court for killing him. The police tried to stop them. So both sides clashed and some officers were injured.

When this case was already going very disturbingly, some people in Pakistan started laughing by creating memes with the horrible incident, that happened to Gobika. How was those memes means, exactly how she died by getting inserted with a hoe, they created a lot of variety memes with it and started laughing.

Instead of hoe, they kept guitars and sticks and recreated the crime scene photos. They started laughing at it.

Looking at the memes, Adhithya angrily said to Gobika’s mother: “Aunty. How dangerous the killers are! But these type of idiots are more dangerous than those three.”

In the end, when the Pakistan officials questioned: “Why they did like this?” They said: “It should happen like this to those type of girls, sir.” The meme creators started telling stories that women should be disciplined.  

FIVE MONTHS LATER

Five months later, Adhithya visits Gobika’s graveyard. Her crime scene’s photos still disturbs his mind very deeply. Looking at the photos of Janakiraaman, Rahul and Nagoor Meeran, he looks at her graveyard and says: “Don’t worry Gobika. You got justice for your brutal death. Because, I killed those three brutally with the help of the Commissioner.”

With an evil laughter, he recalled what happened after people gathered together in the court. After clearing the people, the Commissioner and police team took the trio in a van. While going half a way, he asked the driver to stop near a forest, which he does. Taking the culprits to the forest, the Commissioner called Adhithya and Sanjay, who were waiting along with Sowmiya and Mridula.

There, Sanjay beats up Janakiraaman with an hoe and axe just like he did to Gobika. He inserted the hoe in his private part. While, Adhithya stabbed in Rahul’s chest, leg and thigh brutally. Then, he slits his throat. Then, he proceeds to slit the throat of Nagoor after stabbing him multiples of times. They all die and after this, the Supreme court suspends all the police team for violating the rules of law. Since, Commissioner takes all the blame for the death of the three culprits.

Savitha and her son becomes glad upon hearing from Sanjay that, “The culprits were killed in same way. Like how they did it to Gobika.”

EPILOGUE

This is a common mistake that many people make. Since they think that it is safe to stay in their room or at home, so who might come there, and will be careless.

But if the time is not right, even a normal situation, will change into very dangerous situation. From this case, we can see some points on how to be safe. The first problem is Gobika called Rahul to her room who had been familiar only for a month. Always avoid to meet strangers in an isolated place. Meet them in a public place. The second thing is, she left the door carelessly without looking it.

Gobika thought, that the front gate will be locked. Beyond that, her negligence that who will come to that place, and forgot to lock the room. She slept carelessly without locking it. But that carelessness became a reason to such a big mistake. If she was not careless, she would have checked the door before going to sleep, if she slept with the door locked that night, all three of them would have tried to open the door, and when they try to open it or try to break it, or if they tried something else, Gobika may alerted someone with her mobile phone and she may be alive today.

So always be cautious. Look everyone with a skeptical eye. Don’t believe anyone, most importantly strangers. Why because, as I always say, Stranger! Danger!
