NOTE: This story is based on real-life incidents that happened recently in New Delhi. While inspired by the true events of the Sakshi Murder Case, for the respect of the dead victim, I have taken creative liberties to change the name and merge many incidents into one fictional timeline.

This story doesn’t claim the accuracy or factuality of the events. The purpose of this story is not to hurt anyone, but to tell the tragic story of a murdered victim. This story is dedicated to Sakshi and every such girl in society.

May 29, 2023

Sunday, New Delhi

1O:00 PM

Zuhair Khan, 20, was walking with a knife to the Rithala Metro Station in panic. In the way, he saw a bush, and there he threw away the bloodstained knife into the bush. When he was going to his native place, Bulandshahr, in Uttar Pradesh, he thought of another idea along the way.

Without going to his house, he got down in a place called Aterna and went to his aunt Fathima Begum’s house. He knocked on the door at 4 in the morning.

Begum, who opened the door in the early morning, saw Zuhair and asked, "What are you doing here in the early morning, Zuhair?"

"Aunt. I came to attend my friend’s wedding. Since I didn’t see you for a long time, I came here to visit you and your son." Like every other relative, Fathima also said, "You are looking very tired. Stay here for 2 days."

Now he went to sleep and woke up at 8 in the morning, and he got the phone from Fathima. Zuhair called his father and said, "Dad. I am staying in my aunt’s house."

When Fathima asked about his phone, Zuhair said, "He lost it at the marriage." Now he ate tea and biscuits in the morning and went to sleep. Again, he woke up, ate lunch, and went to sleep again.

It is exactly 3 in the evening, and someone knocked at Fathima’s door. When she opened the door, she was very shocked.

Two police officers, Inspector Aravinth Ranjan and ACP Adhithya, were standing there. Now the police asked her about the whereabouts of Zuhair.

"He is sleeping inside. What is the matter, sir?"

Without saying a word, Aravinth Ranjan played a video and asked her to see it. In that video, a boy will be stabbing a girl continuously and killing her, and the boy who was mercilessly stabbing the girl was none other than Zuhair, who was sleeping in Fathima’s room.

Even I couldn’t see that video fully. Since it was so brutal.)

Seeing this, Fathima was very shocked. Without being able to see that video fully, she became paralysed and fell down. Now both police officers went inside the house. There, they opened the door and saw Zuhair sleeping in the bed. Hearing the sound, he also woke up and sat in bed. Adhithya took the pistol and pointed it towards Zuhair.

"Zuhair. If you tried to move even a bit, I'd pull out the trigger and shoot you. So don’t move." Zuhair, who thought that he couldn’t escape hereafter, sat there without moving.

Aravinth went near him, caught his hand, and said, What, Zuhair? Have you rested for a while? Now come. Let’s go to Delhi." He put handcuffs on him.

Taking him under custody, Adhithya started questioning: "Tell. Why did you kill that girl?"

"That girl means, which girl, sir?" asked Zuhair, to which Adhithya replied, "Priyanka." As he was continuously questioned in the investigation, Zuhair accepted that he had murdered. Since he had no option when the CCTV footage was shown by Adhithya.

Zuhair started explaining why he murdered Priyanka.

A FEW MONTHS BACK

DELHI

16-year-old Priyanka and 20-year-old Zuhair Khan, who was an AC mechanic in Bulandshahr, have been in love for the last three years. And one day she came to know that Zuhair had affairs with lots of girls. From there, Priyanka began to ignore him, and after that, they began to fight often, and finally, one day, it ended in a breakup.

Before Priyanka loved Zuhair, she loved Anuvishnu. At that time, she even had a tattoo of his name on her arms, and Zuhair also knew this. After the breakup, he doubted: "Maybe Priyanka began to talk with Anuvishnu again. That’s why she is avoiding me!"

He called her to make her continue the relationship again.

May 27, 2023

SATURDAY

Zuhair called Priyanka and tortured her to love him again. But when she refused, he began to threaten her violently, and he also threatened her not to tell this to her parents or the police.

Priyanka knows that he will go to any extreme to do what he said, and she didn’t say to anyone that he was torturing her. Even though Priyanka didn’t say anything about this to her parents, they know that they love each other.

Since Priyanka is a minor, her parents have asked her to concentrate on her studies, and they have asked her to end her relationship with Zuhair many times. But without listening to her parents, she continued her relationship with him.

If Priyanka’s parents talk about him, she will get angry and go to her friend’s house. Hence, they won’t talk about him with her. As usual, 15 days before this incident, Priyanka got angry with her parents for some other reason and packed her dress in a bag.

She went to her friend Neha’s house in Rohini, a district in north-west Delhi. Neha has two children, and her husband is in jail for doing criminal activities. Since Neha and her children are alone, Priyanka had no problem staying there.

But at that time, she didn’t know how foolish it was to come out of the house. On May 27, Zuhair again called Priyanka and tortured her.

Without being able to hold the torture, Priyanka told her friend Sakthivel about this. He went to Zuhair and said, "You should not disturb Priyanka again. If I see you disturbing her again, or if she complains about you once again, then I myself can’t predict what will be your fate. Be careful!"

After that, Priyanka didn’t receive any calls from Zuhair, and she thought that he was afraid because of Sakthivel. In overconfidence, in the WhatsApp message, she messaged, "Are you a big rowdy in your area?"

Already, Zuhair was very angry, and this voice message triggered his anger even more. On May 28, the day of the incident, it had been fifteen days since she came to Neha’s house.

She said to Priyanka, "Even though you fought with your parents, it’s not good to stay away from them, Priya. Before Zuhair takes advantage of this and creates a big problem, you go to your parent’s house."

Zuhair’s weird behaviour for the last two days and threatening him with Sakthivel, after that her voice message to him thinking all this, Priyanka thought that what Neha says is right.

She felt that Neha’s house didn’t feel as safe and secure as her parents house. Now Priyanka was mentally prepared to go to her parents house. But since it’s Neha’s daughter's birthday, she planned to surprise her with cake and a dress and leave for her house after that.

Priyanka said to Neha, "Neha. I will go to the bazaar and then leave for my house." Hearing this, she was very happy to send it wholeheartedly.

But Neha didn’t know that it was the last minute to see her best friend alive. At first, Priyanka went to the bazaar alone, and along the way, she met her best friend Vaarana. Both of them went to the bazaar happily.

In the way, suddenly Vaarana held Priyanka’s hand and said, "Walk faster, Priyanka. He is following us."

"Who was it?" asked Priyanka.

For that, Vaarana said, "Zuhair is coming."

"Why are you afraid, Vaarana? What if he came? There are a lot of people around us. Will he come, beat me, and kill me in this crowd?" Priyanka said this and turned back.

Knowing that Zuhair was really coming after them, Priyanka started walking faster. As she didn’t like to speak to him. Now he followed her and asked Priyanka to stop, as he wanted to talk to her in private.

Zuhair said, "Let’s finish everything, and I will not disturb you again."

Hearing this, Priyanka began to walk slowly. She believed what he said and went with him. But Vaarana said not to go. However, Priyanka said she would take care of it and asked her to leave. There are two reasons for Priyanka to go with him without any fear.

The street on which they were standing is near the police station, and there are a lot of people in the street, and it’s not late at night. This secure feeling gave her the confidence to talk to him in private.

Now Zuhair started talking to Priyanka and asked her to forget Anuvishnu and come with him. But she said, "I will not do anything that you say."

The normal conversation turned into a heated argument. Without having any idea of what was going to happen next, before Priyanka, who was standing innocently leaning on the wall, suddenly Zuhair took out the knife he hid.

He holds Priyanka with one hand without allowing her to escape. Zuhair aggressively started stabbing her stomach, chest, and head continuously. He stabbed her violently twenty times.

In that moment, Priyanka went unconscious and fell down. But even though he didn’t stop stabbing her, When he was forcefully stabbing her, at one stage the knife was struck in Priyanka’s head, and he couldn’t take that out, so he searched for some other object there. He found a big rock.

Zuhair took the rock and put it forcefully in Priyanka’s head. He took the rock and repeatedly put it in her head six times. When he put that rock in her face, it fully collapsed. In a few minutes, that place was filled with blood.

The most sad thing is that when Zuhair was aggressively attacking Priyanka, a lot of people crossed them by looking at it, but not even a single person stopped him. The public has not even asked a single question about him. The people looked as if two dogs were fighting.

The incident, which started at 8:44, continued for the next two minutes, and after he left the place for the next twenty minutes, Priyanka lay there in a pool of blood. Even after that, no one came near Priyanka, and look what happened to her. At 9:05, one of the crowd members called the police station and informed them about it.

The police also went there immediately. Hearing the news, Neha and Priyanka’s father came there and took her to the hospital. But the doctors said that she was already dead. Before the police came, Zuhair did all this and walked away casually. He walked for three kilometres and sat in a park.

After that, he switched off his mobile and threw it in the drain.

Seeing the attacking video, Fathima was paralysed and fell down. (Not only her, but anyone who ever saw that spine-chilling video will be stunned.)

PRESENT

At present, when Adhithya asked, "Whether are you sad for murdering Priyanka?"

Zuhair replied, "No."

Now, Adhithya proceeds to the next level of his investigation and asks, "Why did you kill her?"

"Since her ex-boyfriend has a bike, she left me and went with him again, sir. She and her friend Sakthivel threatened me with a dummy gun, and both of them scolded me with bad words. That’s why, in anger, I liked this."

However, Adhithya didn’t believe this and showed another piece of CCTV footage in which Zuhair was seen talking to a person minutes before the crime.

Zuhair replied: "I bought the knife used in the crime from Haridwar 15 days before the murder. Not only Priyanka, sir. But I planned to murder her ex-boyfriend Anuvishnu and two to three other youths."

At the same time, Aravinth investigated Priyanka’s ex-boyfriend, Anuvishnu, who is currently residing in the Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh. Moreover, the police will be checking the mobile phone and social media accounts of the accused, Zuhair Khan.

Meanwhile, in Priyanka’s post-mortem report, there are stabbing wounds in 32 places. Her left lungs were fully damaged, and her head was fully smashed. The most strong bone in the human body is the skull, and to break that skull, a normal human should use 500 kilos of force to break it. That’s how Zuhair pushed that rock with heavy force.

This post-mortem report has been included in the investigation by Delhi Police. Additionally, a team has been formed under the direction of Inspector Aravinth, who is quickly compiling the charge sheet by including all the scattered evidence, including the CCTV grab of the incident showing Zuhair stabbing the girl multiple times with a knife. This police team’s primary objective is to get the accused punished for the grisly murder he committed in full public view on Sunday, May 28, 2023. Aravinth Ranjan would take Zuhair to the location to re-create the crime scene.

Meanwhile, the knife and shoes recovered by the police from the crime scene have been sent to the forensic lab for scientific investigation. Here, the experts would try matching the DNA of the deceased’s parents with the blood splatter found on the knife.

Aravinth has also taken eight mobile phones into their possession, which they are investigating for further evidence. He further said that it has come to light that Zuhair was also associated with a gang of local goons and that he was under the influence of alcohol when he committed the brutal murder.

When Priyanka’s father took her to the hospital, her face was completely collapsed, and her internal organs came out and were hanging. In this condition, when they were taking her to the hospital, he realised that there was no chance for his daughter to be alive. Her father held her dead body in his arms and started crying.

How will the mindset of a father be in that condition? (Like every other father, he wished to make Priyanka a lawyer and dreamed a lot about her daughter’s marriage.)

MAY 30, 2023

On the next day, Neha broke her silence in the case and said to the media reporter, "For the past few days, they had been fighting over some issues, and Priyanka didn’t want to talk to Zuhair. She had gone out to buy some stuff for my son’s birthday, but she never returned."

Meanwhile, another friend, Vaarana, said, "Priyanka knew Zuhair as a Hindu boy."

Following his arrest, pictures emerged showing Zuhair with a Kalava (Hindu religious thread) tied to his hand. Aravinth had said that the matter would also be investigated from the angle of love Jihad’.

On his Instagram profile, Zuhair had uploaded a story saying: "Fearing any God other than Allah is considered shirk."

The CCTV visuals also appeared, where the accused can be seen stabbing the girl multiple times and then hitting her head with a boulder. Several locals can be seen present there, but no one intervened in the matter. Aravinth Ranjan and Adhithya had registered an FIR in the matter under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Shahbad Dairy Police Station.

Meanwhile, opposition party leader Kapil Mishra also took to Twitter to point out that the Muslim accused was wearing a Kalava around his wrist. Calling it an incident of love Jihad, the leader questioned with whose tactical support the accused carried out the heinous crime.

May 30, 2023 TO June 1, 2023

DELHI

While the Police are investigating the love-jihad angle in the case, journalist Dinesh visited the Shahbad Dairy area to learn that Priyanka was probably killed after she knew the original identity of the accused.

Since Zuhair wore Kalava in his hand and that Priyanka had known him only as a Hindu person. The duo had engaged in a massive fight a day before the murder.

Meanwhile, Journalist Dinesh met Priyanka’s cousin to investigate her murder case.

Now, the cousin brother of the deceased victim, a Shahbad Dairy resident, said to Dinesh that they belong to the Dalit community.

"We are a family of around 12–13 members. We are from the Bahujan community belonging to the Gautam sect," the deceased victim’s cousin said.

When Dinesh asked about what transpired on the fateful Sunday night, the victim’s relative said, "It was around 9:45 p.m. when we were informed (about Sakshi’s murder), and then we rushed there. It takes about 10–15 minutes to reach there (the deceased victim’s house)."

On the question regarding the accused Zuhair Khan being a Muslim and if Priyanka knew about his real identity, her relative said, "I’m not aware of the accused Zuhair Khan being a Muslim. Chacha ji may have been told about this, but whatever information we have, we didn’t know anything about this."

After investigating her cousin, Dinesh met Priyanka’s parents. Feeling sorry for her death, he investigated the case with her parents.

Speaking to him, Priyanka’s mother said, "Never saw Zuhair. We demand justice for our daughter." The bereaved mother recalled how her daughter always dreamed of taking care of them like a son.

"I’ll always be a son to you," the bereaved mother recalled Priyanka telling her several times. She added that Priyanka, who had recently completed class ten, was aspiring to be a lawyer before she met her dastardly fate.

The mother added that: "On the day of the incident, Priyanka told me that she was going to the public toilet near our house and returning home. I don’t know why she went there; the accused killed her near the toilet," the mother recalled.

Demanding the death penalty for the perpetrator, Priyanka’s mother said: "If he’s kept in the lock-up, he will be released sooner or later. This is how it works. Nowadays, everything works on bribes. I want justice and a life for a life. Otherwise, he will do it again. Today it was my daughter; tomorrow it will be someone else." As she cried inconsolably, Dinesh became sad and emotional.

Priyanka’s father also echoed similar sentiments.

"My daughter was stabbed many times. Her intestines bulged out and her head was also broken into four pieces. We demand the strictest punishment for the accused." He said. Her father said he did not know anything about Zuhair.

"I did not know any Zuhair. I did not know if they were friends or if they had a quarrel. I had not heard of him from her or any of her friends," he told Dinesh.

"During the police questioning, one of her friends told me that they were friends, but I did not know earlier," her father said.

The next day, on June 1, 2023, Dinesh was told that in the Shahbad Dairy area, illegal drugs are traded with impunity, with the police being complicit, and there is an influx of Bangladeshi Muslims settling in the area.

Furthermore, he and his team came to know about a lack of well-maintained public spaces, encroachment on designated public areas, a rise in the crime rate, unsafe social conditions, and the mushrooming of unauthorised Mazars in the locality.

In line with this, he and his team visited the Shahbad Dairy area to investigate further. There, they met Narayan Singh, one of the local journalists.

While talking to Dinesh, Singh stated that there’s a high possibility that the girl was killed by Zuhair after she learned his original identity.

"Zuhair used to wear Kalava in his hand. He had made the girl think that he belonged to the Hindu community. It might have happened that the girl came to know about his identity and tried to stay away from him, and then the murder happened," he added.

Singh also added that the girl had a black tattoo on her hand in the name of some Anuvishnu.

"A day before the murder, the duo engaged in a massive fight on the same spot. The girl probably wanted to part ways with Zuhair after knowing that he was a Muslim. The next day, he called her and asked her to meet, but she refused. He kept on pleading, but to no avail. On May 28, the girl can be seen in the CCTV footage arriving in the area, and then he stabbed her after a small conversation," he added.

Narayan Singh lives at a distance of two kilometres from the murder spot and was the first person to report the murder. He also revealed that Zuhair had purchased the murder knife 15 days before the incident and could not control his anger during the murder. "He could have stabbed her 2 or 3 times, but he stabbed her like 20 times and also crushed her with a huge stone. What is this if not his anger? Whether he was drugged or drunk is not known, but he seems to have lost control over himself during the murder," Singh said.

Narayan Singh asserted that it is part of the agenda being furthered by Islamists.

"There are many like Zuhair who operate like sleeper cells. These people trap innocent Hindu girls in ‘love’ affairs and then do mischief with them. If their identities are exposed, they murder. Recently, the Shraddha Walkar case happened, in which the girl was cut into 35 small pieces and stored in a refrigerator by Aftab. There are many incidents of love jihad that happen in the nearby area," he noted, adding that not even Hindu men are spared by the Islamists.

Narayan Singh also said that the accused are not scared of the Delhi Police, and the families of the victims are scared of the accused instead.

"They (families) sometimes fear that they might also get killed if they speak against the accused," he said. Narayan also said that the administration and the Delhi police create pressure and avoid the media in such cases.

On the day of the murder, Singh was the first to reach the spot. He was informed by one of the locals that a girl had been killed in the area.

"I reached within 10 minutes and saw Priyanka’s dead body lying half in the gutter and half on the streets. The Delhi Police had already reached the location, and on seeing the media, they began avoiding," he said.

Singh also said that some of Priyanka’s friends had also reached the spot and were avoiding speaking about the matter. They were probably afraid Zuhair would not be arrested by then. Neha broke her silence after the Delhi Police arrested the accused.

"Sir. Did people help Priyanka?"

"About half an hour after I reached the spot, an ambulance was called. They kept the ambulance waiting for some time. The forensic team came after the ambulance, and they collected evidence like blood and other things. Around 4 to 5 friends of the victim were present at that time. These friends are Neha, Sakthivel, Vaarana, and others. Sakthivel helped lift the body and put it in the ambulance. This happened at around 11:30 p.m. I somehow finished my reporting and left."

Singh said, "Nobody talked much during my coverage that day. It is quite obvious, as every one of them was afraid that they might get into some trouble if they spoke anything about the crime. Priyanka’s friends also did not say anything."

"Why did the police not allow journalists to report that day?" asked Dinesh.

Narayan Singh said, "The police in this area create hindrances every time I report any crime. There is a reason behind that too. They don’t want the area to be defamed. They feel that if crimes in the area and the illegal drug business get covered in the media, then their police station unit or district will be defamed. This is why they don’t allow us to report. We usually don’t visit the spot unless a forensic team arrives. We usually stand at a distance and report. But after the forensic team gets hold of the spot, then also, the police don’t allow us to report from the visible ranges of the crime spot."

"Illegal drugs and liquor businesses in the area Is that true?" asked Dinesh.

Narayan Singh replied, "Dinesh. Illegal drugs, illegal liquor, and marijuana businesses are spread everywhere in this area. The police have failed to stop this menace, and they do not let us report properly when something is exposed or some crime happens. Suppose that if something is published in the media, they do a raid or two for the namesake. No further action takes place. All these illegal businesses are mostly done by illegal Bangladeshi migrants, most of whom are Muslims."

Narayan Singh further informed Dinesh: "There are many such slums in sectors 26, 27, and 28. These Bangladeshis live in these areas. Take the example of the Shahbad Dairy area. Every lane here is facing two to three problems. Be it illegal liquor, drugs, marijuana, betting, gambling, etc. Illegal Bangladeshis are involved in this. Recently, the Narcotic Control Bureau and a special team raided this area of Swati Chowk to seize drugs worth Rs 35 lakh. These people sell illegal liquor and drugs in their houses. Some reports said that Zuhair was either under the influence of drugs or drunk before committing the crime because it is so commonly available in this area. This is the failure of the administration on the narcotics front."

When Dinesh asked about the encroachments on public spaces, Narayan Singh underlined the severe problem of encroachments in the area. He said, "You see the MCD parks? All of them are full of illegal encroachments. Where will the local public go to refresh themselves? Where will they go? Are there some lawns to sit on? Can the family go there? Can the senior citizens go there for morning or evening walks? No. All the parks in the Shahbad Dairy area are filled with illegal settlers. We cannot say that this consists of one particular community. All types of people live there. They have encroached on it in their own style. There is not a single place here where a family can go together, sit, talk, have fun and refreshments, and do a morning or evening walk. Everything is encroached upon. All public spaces are gone. In such a situation, if a girl goes some distance away from home, then there is a risk that she may get raped."

When Dinesh asked if there was any difference in the crime rate after the ruling party came to power in Delhi with a promise of good governance, Narayan Singh said,

"There is no change in the crime rates. It was the same in the Sheela Dixit government as it is now in the AAP government. Yesterday, only an incident of cow slaughter took place not so far from here. It is a crime that takes place every day. Some days ago, it happened in Rohini. Before that, it took place in Kanjhawala. Now, in sector 28, So no change in crime scenes And in this country, we need an UP government. Then only may it stop. Otherwise, there are these Bangladeshi people, and God knows what different communities are there that kill cows. Such crimes are constantly increasing, and there is no change. That cow slaughter took place around 5 kilometres from here. And who kills cows? We Hindus worship cows like mothers. Can we kill our mother?"

Dinesh and his team continued to conduct their on-site investigation to assess and gather information on various aspects surrounding the tragic incident.

"Guys. Our primary focus is to understand the motive behind the murder, evaluate the current situation, and collect relevant information from the local community members impacted by the incident."

Ok, sir," said his team.

During their interactions with the residents, Dinesh initially planned to visit the location where Priyanka was brutally murdered. However, before reaching the site, his team noticed a gathering of media personnel with cameras in one area.

Upon inquiry, they discovered that it was the office of the AAP MLA. Interestingly, unlike typical MLA offices, there was no noticeable signboard or banner indicating the presence of a political leader.

The intriguing backstory behind this peculiar situation was later unveiled by a resident after Dinesh questioned him about it.

The location where Priyanka was tragically murdered seemed relatively calm, with only a couple of YouTubers capturing footage. The mainstream media, on the other hand, was positioned at a considerable distance.

The crime scene and the office of the Aam Aadmi Party MLA were situated a mere 200 metres apart, with a park separating the two locations. This so-called park lacked vegetation and greenery, and adjacent to it we saw a sizable maze. It was during the exploration that Dinesh encountered a resident named Dalip Kumar in the vicinity of the Mazar.

Speaking with him about Priyanka’s murder, Dinesh questioned him about a park located about 50 metres away from the murder site and the Mazar adjacent to it.

To this, Dalip said, "There was no tomb in the park before. About 10–15 years ago, there were some bricks kept over there in the name of Mazar. After this, 5-7 years ago, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Jai Bhagwan Upkar (who is now an MLA) first got the roof of the Mazar installed after winning from here. When Hindus protested, the police reprimanded the Hindus instead of banning Muslims from building the Mazar."

According to Dalip Kumar, the Aam Aadmi Party and Arvind Kejriwal promote this kind of politics. In such politics, Muslim interests are served and Hindus are ignored. If Hindus protest, they are systematically threatened.

Dalip Kumar further told me, "Adjacent to the park, along the roadside, there stood an idol of a goddess sheltered beneath a peepal tree. This sacred spot was frequented by local Hindus for worship. However, after the construction of the nearby Mazar, when the Hindu community attempted to erect a temple in place of the idol, the construction work was abruptly halted. As a result, the idol of the goddess remains within the unfinished temple structure, while temple construction and completion are not allowed by the administration."

Why was the board removed from the AAP MLA’s office?" asked Akhil, one of Dinesh’s friends in the team.

He said, "Prior to the murder incident, signboards were installed outside the MLA’s office. However, the following morning, these boards were unexpectedly taken down. This action was undertaken with the intention of avoiding any perception that a murder had occurred in close proximity to the MLA’s office, so as not to negatively impact public sentiment about the leader."

After the investigation with Dalip Kumar, Dinesh proceeds to his office with his team. During that time, Akhil questioned him: "Dinesh. I am unable to believe this. Why are these kinds of incidents happening in our country alone?"

Turning back to him, Dinesh replied, "You believe or not. The darkest minds tend to hide behind the most unlikely faces. Let’s carpe the hell out of this diem, Akhil. Don’t worry." He and his team moved towards their office before meeting the MLA in the residency. As the MLA came towards Dinesh, he got ready to have a face-off with him.

EPILOGUE
