THE BRUTAL MURDER

MADRAS, TAMILNADU

That morning, a house broker named Anand went to a two-store building in Anna Nagar, Madras, and started ringing the bell. There were already two girls renting that place. One week before, they planned to purchase that bungalow on their own. They talked with the owner, Dr. Narayana Prasad, and finalised for 15 lakhs.

They asked the broker, Anand, to prepare the bond papers and come after five days. Five days later, on October 20, 1986, I went to that bungalow and started ringing the calling bell. Even after a while, no one came out. He thought that no one was at home. But the slippers of the two girls were outside the house, and for the past five days, newspapers have been lying outside the house.

Anand became suspicious of that. To check whether someone was at home, he walked around the bungalow and checked whether any windows were open. But all the windows were closed. When he was checking and walking around, a decomposed stinking smell started to come.

Now Anand went to the back door of the bungalow and saw that it was opened. With confusion and doubt, he entered the bungalow, and the decomposed smell started coming heavily. Anand started to check where the smell was coming from. When he was opening and checking each room in that bungalow, he finally found that the smell was coming from the bathroom and went inside. There, he saw a shocking scene. He saw the dead bodies of two girls on a decomposed stage.

When Anand saw that, he was so scared and ran away from that place faster. He went straight to the police station and told them what he saw. Immediately, police also went to that place. When they went inside the bungalow and saw it, the crime scene was very terrible. In the walls, grounds, and all places of the house, blood was splattered everywhere. From both girls stomachs, intestines scattered and came out. The girls who were brutally murdered in the bungalow are 24-year-old Rani Padmini and her mother, 42-year-old Indhira Kumari.

In the 1980s, like Silk Smitha, Rani Padmini was a famous heroine for glamour roles in Malayalam. In Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi, she acted in 61 movies at that time itself.

In Tamil and Malayalam, at the time when she was becoming a big heroine, people seriously talked about who might have killed her brutally. After that, the police found the killer in this case. (When he confessed, it created a fear in the minds of people who heard that.)

Indhira Kumari, who was born in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, in 1944, had a very big dream of becoming a very big heroine in cinema. But it was only a dream. Indhira, who came to Madras to achieve something in cinema, got only dubbing roles. When Indhira was 18 years old, she married a man called Vishwanath Chaudri. After the things she couldn’t achieve in the cinema field, she began to live with a dream to make her daughter a big heroine.

Padmini, who was raised by watching movies, had an interest in movies as she grew up. Because of that, after her schooling, she joined the film institute. Padmini became the best student in acting and dancing. Since she had all the things like beauty and talent for a heroine, her mother taught that it was the right time to make her a heroine. She asked a lot of directors for a chance.

At that time, Padmini got a chance, and her first movie was Kathayariyathe. After that, through a Malayalam director, she got a small role in a movie called Sangharsham. At that time, since a lot of heroine names were Padmini, she changed her name to Rani Padmini.

After that, when Rani Padmini started to act in a glamour role, a lot of movie opportunities came to her. Until then, the person who told me that dubbing artist Indhira Kumari’s daughter, Rani Padmini, started calling that actress Padmini’s mother Indhira Kumari. The things that Indhira Kumari wished for but couldn’t achieve in her life were accomplished by her daughter. She was very proud of it. They began to earn lakhs. When the police went to that room, it was filled with alcohol bottles. They noticed that there were a lot of fingerprints in those bottles. When they took those fingerprints and matched them with the fingerprints from the crime scene, both of them perfectly matched.

Now, when the police inquired who was in that room, they came to know that it was the cook Ganeshan of that bungalow and the watchman Lakshmi Narasimhan. Both of them stayed there. At the same time, Rani Padmini’s car also went missing. The driver, Lenin Jebaraj, the watchman, and the cook—the police started searching all three of them.

Nine days after the murder, police found driver Lenin and arrested him for investigation. But Lenin said that he had nothing to do with that murder.

“Sir. Rani Padmini had an affair with a MLA. He might have killed her by recruiting some people. To hide that they are trying to make us guilty." But the police didn’t believe what he said. They called Lenin’s friend and inquired about him.

Shocking news came out through Lenin’s friend during the investigation.

One night, when Lenin took Rani Padmini and her mother from a shooting spot, Rani Padmini was wearing a short dress that exposed her thighs. When Lenin was driving the car through the back mirror, he started to look at Rani Padmini from the wrong angle. Noticing this, Rani Padmini’s mother became very angry. Immediately, both of them scolded Lenin in the car.

After the car reached the bungalow, Indhira got down from the car and slapped Lenin.

“You should not come to work hereafter," said Indhira.

Lenin’s friend told him what he said to him. After that, on November 3, police found watchman Narasimhan. When they asked him who did those murders, he confessed that the three of them did them.

After Rani Padmini and Indhira came to the bungalow, they put up a hiring ad in the newspaper. Seeing that, Lakshmi Narayanan first joined as a watchman. After that, driver Lenin and cook Ganeshan joined the work. At first, everything was fine. But Rani Padmini and her mother often went shopping, and mostly they went to a jewellery shop, and all of them noticed that.

Lenin, who took them to buy jewels often, started to have wrong thoughts about those jewels, as did Rani Padmini from the start. Lenin is already a criminal who came from jail. The cook, Ganeshan, is also a criminal who came from jail. But Rani Padmini and Indhira didn’t know about this. Without proper checking, they hired them for work. But at that time, they didn’t know how bad it was.

After Indhira slapped Lenin and stopped him from work, Lenin thought that he should somehow take revenge on them. On that day, without leaving, he waited outside the bungalow. After that, the next day, on October 15, to buy the bungalow they were renting, Padmini and her mother took 15 lakhs from the bank and came home.

Somehow Lenin came to know about it and said this to the cook and watchman. He triggered their desire for money and started to brainwash them.

“After killing Rani Padmini and her mother, we will steal all the money and jewels. Then, we will settle somewhere,” said Lenin. At first, the watchman and the cook hesitated to do it. But even if they kill both of them, no relatives or friends are there to ask. Since they worked for a long time, they know this. Finally, this thing gave strength to Ganeshan and Narasimhan to join Lenin Jebaraj. After both of them said okay to this plan, Lenin immediately went out and bought three knives. After that, they waited for the right time to kill them.

The time they chose is the drinking time for Rani Padmini and Indhira. That was the time they consumed alcohol, and like they thought, the right time also came. Lenin, who was waiting outside, hid the knife behind his back. He slowly walked into the hall of the bungalow. But Padmini and her mother were not there. He heard some noise in the kitchen and went there. Cook Ganeshan and watchman Narasimhan followed him.

Indhira, who was standing in the kitchen, felt that someone was standing behind her. She turned back to see who it was. When she turned suddenly, Lenin, with the knife in his hand, stabbed Indhira in her stomach and neck many times. Indhira was shocked and started screaming in pain. Hearing the sound, Padmini rushed down from the bedroom. When she came down, she saw her mother lying in a pool of blood. Along with that, she saw all three of them standing with the knife. Looking at this, she quickly realised the situation and screamed by looking at her mother. She tried to run out and escape. But Lenin, Ganeshan, and Narasimhan ran fast, locked the door, and caught Padmini, who tried to escape.

Grabbing her hands, Lenin said, “Where are you trying to escape? You can’t even escape from us.” Ganeshan and Narasimhan slapped Padmini, and she fell down.

Looking at Rani Padmini cruelly, Lenin kissed her inner thighs and outer thighs. He caressed Rani Padmini's chest and boobs. Remembering the slap by Indhira, Lenin said to Ganeshan, “For looking at this bitch's**** thighs only, her mother slapped me right. Now, see what happened. We three are going to taste and enjoy the whole body of Rani Padmini.”

Now, Lenin wildly removed Rani Padmini’s sari. After removing her sari, he hurriedly tore away and removed her skirts and bikini. After taking off his dress, he went near a nude Rani Padmini, who screamed in fear. Forcefully kissing Rani Padmini’s lips, Lenin brutally raped her by kissing and biting her chest, boobs, cheeks and in between her legs.

“No….No….No….Please spare me” Rani Padmini screamed aloud in pain. She pleads with Lenin Jebaraj to spare her. However, he doesn't listen to her. After raping her, Lenin forcefully passed his semen in Rani’s private parts.

“Ganeshan and Narasimhan. Now, it’s your turn. Go and rape her. Without forget, feel and enjoy her beautiful body. You know? Her body structure is superb.” Lenin said to them.

“Please spare me." Rani Padmini pleads with them.

Thirsty with lust and smitten by Rani’s beautiful face and body, Ganesh and Narasimhan went near her. As they neared her, she feared and said, "No."

Now, both of them raped her cruelly and rudely. Rani screamed for help by saying, “No…No… Help… Help please…No...”

After Ganeshan and Narasimhan raped Rani Padmini brutally by passing their semen, Lenin stabbed her many times in the chest, stomach, and neck. In the next few minutes, Padmini died. Padmini’s mother, Indhira, who was fighting for her life, saw all this and was crying. The next second she saw her daughter brutally killed, she also died. After that, all three of them dragged the dead body to the bathroom and opened the door in the room, where they took all the jewels.

Since that jewel was not enough from Indira and Padmini’s dead bodies, they took all the jewels from their necks and ears. After that, in a panic without taking all the money in the locker, they took only 10,000 rupees in a hurry and divided the jewels and rupees into three. Then they left the place. When Lenin Jebaraj left, he also took Padmini’s car.

Watchman Narasimhan confessed all this to the police. Hearing why and how they killed them, the police themselves were very shocked.

FOUR YEARS LATER

1988

Police found cook Ganeshan and recovered all the jewels they took. After that, Lenin, Narasimhan, and Ganeshan were given death sentences. However, in the Supreme Court, that death sentence was converted into a life sentence.
