Bipin Babu lived in the suburbs of Kolkata and owned land. He used to make good rewarding money by farming. He lived with his family and was happy. He and his wife sold milk to the villagers, and everything went well. His two sons were studying in school. They were between 10 and 15.
Bipin Babu was in his 50s and his health was good but suddenly he developed a headache. He didn’t take it seriously and kept on working on his farm. But as days went by the pain increased more and more and he had severe headaches.
A few months ago, he and his family shifted to a new, larger house. He thought the new house was not suitable for him and consulted the local pandit. The local pundit was astonished as he had done ‘Griha puja’ about three months earlier. So, he advised him to visit the doctor. The doctor gave him a few medicines and told him to have a good diet. Bipin Babu couldn’t figure out what good diet he could have. He had homegrown vegetables, pure milk, ghee and fruits, fish and many more.
One day, Bipin's cousin visited his house and was worried when he
saw Bipin's headache condition. He took him to Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta, and decided to have him seen by Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy.
In 1960, Dr. Bidhan Roy was the chief minister of West Bengal. Despite his busy schedule, he continued to see patients in the morning at his residence due to his exceptional medical skills. Bipin and his cousin visited Dr. Roy for a serious health issue. The doctor heard patiently what Bipin had to say and then looking into him he wrote in his prescription, ‘Reverse sleeping’ and no medicine.
They were puzzled and couldn’t work out and asked the compounder what the doctor wrote. The compounder explained that Bipin’s sleeping direction was wrong. He was sleeping his head pointing the North. When one sleeps facing the North it invites iron which accumulates in the brain. It also causes disorders in blood circulation and thus creating a heavy head and headaches.
Bipin Babu never again complained of headaches.
Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was a doctor par excellence.
