Keya’s Workbook
A yarn of remembrance knitted together
Shilpi was cleaning her wardrobe. Bibhas had left for the office and would be dropping Mrinal off at school. Usually, Mrinal took the school bus, but today he wanted to ride in his father’s new car. Bibhas had been promoted to a high position in his company, becoming a Director.
While cleaning the wardrobe, Shilpi found an old album containing photos of her grandmother, Thamma, who had passed away 10 years ago. Flipping through the pages brought back memories of the old lady who had helped her 20 years ago. Shilpi was in her final year of her master's in English Literature, and her father, a businessman, was discussing her marriage to his childhood friend’s son, Rohan, who was doing well in the States. Despite Rohan's father speaking highly of his son, Shilpi didn't like the idea. She confided in her grandmother, who advised her to remain calm and see how things unfolded.
Shilpi and Bibhas had a good connection. Bibhas worked as a computer special
ist, and Shilpi liked him for his simplicity. However, Shilpi's father was determined to arrange her marriage with Rohan, as he was his childhood friend’s son. When Rohan and his parents visited, they boasted about his achievements and wealth, which didn't sit well with Shilpi and Thamma. Despite this, Shilpi remained quiet and went along with their plans.
However, Thamma advised her to observe how Rohan treated others, especially those working under him. During a dinner outing, Rohan displayed arrogance and rudeness towards the restaurant staff, which deeply troubled Shilpi. She realized she couldn't be with a man like him. After seeking advice from Thamma, she decided to stand up for herself and refused to marry Rohan. Now, Shilpi is happily married to Bibhas, valuing their honest and respectful life over material wealth. She is grateful to Thamma for her wisdom and guidance.
The moral of the story is to judge a person based on their character, not their wealth.
