They laughed at Hari's father and then cursed him.

"No one should plant a Banyan tree in their yard," they said.

"Banyan trees should always grow of their own," others said.

But Hari's father was adamant and planted a Banyan tree seed and took care of it. At his death bed, he called Hari and asked him to take care of the tree. "The tree will protect you," he said to Hari and died.

Fifty years later, when a cyclone hit the coastal area, it destroyed all the houses of the village. Hari's neighbors came and took shelter in Hari's house for it was the only house that was shielded and protected by a giant Banyan tree.
