Quarantine And Rain

Quarantine And Rain

You sit out on the balcony, on that comfortable wooden rocking chair that your mother gave to you after you moved out for good. In your hands, you hold your favorite hot beverage. You glance at the rain pouring outside. The tiny droplets of water, falling down in pellets, hitting anything it comes in contact with.

You don’t see anyone out (because of the lockdown), but you imagine the time when there would be hordes of people out, everyone running and scattering about, trying to escape getting soaked. You too once were like that, busy, running around trying to fulfill your tasks as an employee. But now that your company has shut down, you realize the beauty of just sitting and lazing about.

No one ordering you to finish your files on time, no one berating you on the importance of time. Just peace and quiet. You feel like you could get used to life like this, become nervous at the thought of returning to your previous life before this lockdown.

But at this moment, you are determined to just let the sound of the rain bring you the relaxing effect you were hoping for. You sigh, watching the steam from your beverage float up and become one with the air around you. As you watch the rain falling, you wonder what others are up to. Your friends are probably busy in their daily lives, some married, some with their significant others, but most, bachelors like you.

You do want someone by your side, sitting next to you, holding you, but you just don’t have the time. When you had a job, you were too busy running around to find someone, now that you don’t have a job, you can’t go out to find someone. So, while everyone else has someone by their side during these long months of quarantine, you are alone, save for the few visits your parents make. But while you do feel extremely lonely, you also enjoy the peace and quiet at home, being able to do what you wish to, whenever you want to, and you feel like these extremely long months at home wasn’t too bad.

As you sip your beverage, you feel this satisfaction that you never felt before. This feeling of serenity and calm washes over you, and makes you smile.

You finish your hot beverage and head inside, not before leaving the balcony door open slightly to let the cool breeze blow in.
