LUIGI: CHAPTER 2

Note: This story is a sequel to my story Luigi: Chapter 1, focusing in-depth on the life of Luigi and his life as a gangster in Mumbai.

Also, several articles about gold smuggling and the then prominent gangsters of Mumbai- Chotta Rajan, Dawood Ibrahim and Haji Masthan served as an inspiration most importantly, the subject- Mumbai as the Cocaine Capital of India. FEW DAYS LATER:

CHENNAI:

4:30 AM:

A few days later after narrating the events that happened in Mumbai and North Chennai respectively, Rajendran suffers a stroke, recalling a few events that happened in 2013. He is admitted to a hospital in Chennai, where doctors are less hopeful about his survival.

Hearing the news, Sahana and the TV Channel owner goes to the hospitals and inquire about his relatives. They come across his 20-year-old son Sai Adhithya, a Journalism student at Chennai Institutions.

Sahana said to Sai Adhithya, "Adhithya. Your father Rajendran is really a good person. He has done a lot of good things as a journalist."

Adhithya turned to her. He is wearing a thick blue shirt and jeans pants. Wearing his reading glass, he said: "I don't know whether he is a good person or a bad person. But, I very well know that he was a good father to me."

Pausing for a while, he states: "In my childhood, my mother deserted both of us. Since then, he was like a pillar, guiding and supporting me in each and everything. But apart from all these things, he is more dedicated to this particular subject. That's about the life of Luigi."

With a smile on her face, Sahana asked Adhithya: "Are you explaining the remaining part of this story?"

He looked at her and said: "My father would tell the rest of this story. While I would explain this Chapter 2 madam." They go to Rajendran's house, where their housemaid people stop them and said: "Dear. Sir won't allow us to enter this room. You are the first person to go inside this room."

"Enough of build-ups sir. Open the door." As he opened, Adhithya searched for Luigi's 2nd chapter, with the help of the TV Channel owner and Sahana. After long searching, Sahana finds out Luigi's 2nd Chapter.

30 MINUTES LATER:

"Do you believe this could be true?" asked Sahana, to which Adhithya said: "Maybe, it could be the work of a mad man. You see. My father is dedicated and passionate about his profession. So, I believe firmly that this could be a true incident."

"What happened after Luigi took charge as the crime boss of Mumbai? Are you reading it?" asked Sahana, to which Adhithya said: "After Luigi took charge as the kingpin of Mumbai underworld, there were many hidden truths left behind. You see. We know that cat is drinking milk. But, we don't know how it does so!"

(The story takes a change in narration. I follow First-person Narration as narrated by Sai Adhithya.)

FEW YEARS BACK:

DECEMBER 1998:

DARAVI:

After taking down his enemies Ramakrishnan, Chotta Rajan, and Selvam, Luigi decides to take charge as the kingpin of Mumbai Underworld. With the support of Radhakrishnan Deshmukh and Anjali Deshmukh, he formed a meeting with C.D.Mani, Nagendran, Ravi, and Kanagu at the mansion of Radhakrishnan Deshmukh, Daravi.

"Welcome my dear partners. Oh! This room is good and well-built uncle. So comfortable to do settlings and smuggling, you know!" Luigi said, looking at Radhakrishnan Deshmukh.

"Why have you called us for this meeting? Say that first" said C.D.Mani, Nagendran, and Ravi.

"I am going to make you an offer you can't refuse," said Luigi, to which Nagendran looked at him and asked: "What offer are you going to give us?"

Smoking a cigar, Luigi was silent for thirty seconds. After a while, he opens up saying: "You all must take the control of North Chennai. While I would rule this whole Mumbai."

Hearing this, C.D.Mani gets furious and asked him: "Are you playing? You are saying it like chocolate. Who are you to offer us? Do you know? It's Pathan Shetty, who had been the king of Mumbai. First, defeat him and then, take charge of Mumbai." A while later, Santhosh Singh rushes to meet Radhakrishnan and said: "Sir. Pathan Shetty and his men have gone missing."

"Gangsta rappers can't fight, so they rap about guns. Luigi was the one, behind the exile of Pathan Shetty and his gang."

Now, Luigi turns to C.D.Mani, after taking the gun and kills him as he opposed his words. Turning to the fearful Nagendran, he said: "You know sir? The loudest one in the room is the weakest one in the room. Now, there won't be any problem, I think!"

Nagendran flees accepting to take the regime of North Chennai. After taking control over Mumbai, Luigi formed a collaboration with Kerala's gold smuggler Chettuva Haji, a resident of Chettuva near Chavakkad in Thrissur district. He was the cook in trading groceries and provisions to Gulf Countries. Along with the goods in Uru, he used to smuggle pulses and other materials on his own to the Gulf Countries.

He used to sell the material and buy gold coins in return which were smuggled into the country. Soon he became the blue-eyed boy of dreaded smugglers in Mumbai. Among them are Pathan Shetty and Ahmed Askar.

1999:

JAWAHARLAL NEHRU PORT:

Sai Adhithya meanwhile, notes the photo of his father Rajendran and a boat driver, who used to go to Jawaharlal Nehru Port. Rajendran meets him and said: "Sir. I asked about Luigi. But, no one in Mumbai or in North Chennai has told about him. At least, you tell about him, sir! I won't add your name, sir."

"No. Put my name. Aravinth Shetty. May I tell you one incident that happened in 1988?"

As he looked, Aravinth Shetty opens up about gold that was smuggled by Luigi in 1988:

If gangs smuggled gold biscuits weighing 116.5 gms then, today they bring bars of 1 kg each. The details of the country where it has been manufactured date of manufacturing and the name of the factory is inscribed on the smuggled gold. The gold smuggled in 24 carats or 99.9 percent pure. If it is melted and given a different form then it becomes difficult for them to prove that the metal is smuggled gold. However, Luigi managed to bring this gold and was controlling the smuggling activity, under Pathan Shetty's control and support.

"Was Mumbai prominent only in gold smuggling?" asked Sahana at present, to which Adhithya said: "Mumbai was the mastermind for every gangster and smuggler. And today, it's the cocaine capital of India."

How many people would believe it if they are told that smuggling in Kerala began in silk clothes? But that is the truth. Radio, tape recorders, and watches were also favored in those days.

JUNE 1999:

In June 1999, Luigi was celebrating Anjali's birthday party with Radhakrishnan Deshmukh and Santhosh Singh, who becomes his close aide and protector. At the same time, Pathan Shetty joins hands with Ahmed Askar in Pakistan, settling all their previous differences. Nagendran, Ravi, and Kanagu also support Pathan Shetty in order to bring Mumbai under their control.

Ahmed's Kalashnikov guns are bought by Shetty's men. With the guns, they take down South Mumbai, Coastal Mumbai, and Central Mumbai, by killing Luigi's men at each and every corner in order to bring the place under their control. Mansoor Ahmed is forced to live in hiding.

Ahmed Askar steps inside Mumbai with the help of his men. After killing Radhakrishnan Deshmukh and Santhosh Singh brutally, he kidnaps Anjali Deshmukh so that, Luigi will come to rescue her. The plan works. In the fight, Ahmed shoots Luigi but spares him saying: "I am not mad Luigi. But, I am proud of you. You took your first pinch like a man and you learned the two greatest things in life…never rat on your enemies and always keep your mouth shut. I am sparing your life. Go."

Luigi's men and Anjali takes him to their mansion. Luigi recovers with her help. During the funeral of Radhakrishnan Deshmukh and Santhosh Singh, he sees Anjali upset and sad. Holding her face gaze, he tells: "Anjali. It's very hard to tell whether there are more guns or flowers at the uncle's funeral. I would rather have the undertaker's privilege with some high-class gang than have a seat on the stock exchange. We would recover. Don't worry."

She hugs him and the night, he remembers some wonderful days spent with Radhakrishnan and Anjali when they were in North Chennai: Like going into the Ocean and eating fish. He goes mad and shouts in anger. Henceforth, Anjali goes in and said: "What da? I am there for you to support right? Sleep peacefully!"

The next day, Pathan Shetty calls Luigi and said: "Luigi. You made me to run. See, how you are suffering now! You could have been a bodyguard to me right! Ha. Now to you can be so. Bring your queen in the process too. She is my entertainment!" He laughs saying this. Luigi gets angry on hearing this.

PRESENT:

"It's really curious sir. Why Luigi is silent despite being attacked like this? Is there anything in his mind?" As Sahana asked this, Adhithya said: "Because there are many enemies against him. Among them are Shetty, Ahmed Askar, and his North Chennai Associates. "

"Who is going to help Luigi?"

After some time, Adhithya said: "Abdul Rahman!"

DECEMBER 1999:

There was a hotel named Pakistan in Kasaragod and that is how A.P.Abdul Rahman became Pakistan Abdul Rahman. He has been controlling the business from Dubai. Because of his sharp memory, clarity, and meticulous planning, he earned the nickname "computer." Even though he was behind many gold smuggling episodes in Mumbai, there is not even a single smuggling case against him in the state.

Let me make even more explanation about Rahman to you. The year 1989, February 12. Place- Talapady check post on the Kerala-Karnataka border. Two cars going towards Mangaluru were intercepted by the DRI team. The DRI officials seized 1600 gold biscuits weighing more than 190 kg which would have been worth Rs 100 plus crores today. The gold was seized while it was being taken to Mumbai after the consignment landed on the Kanhangad coast. The gold was sent from Dubai by the Ahmed Askar gang.

The responsibility of carrying the gold to Mumbai was entrusted to Kanhangad resident and Abdul Rahman's relative Shahnawaz Hamza. Abdul later came to know that Hamza had betrayed him. Hanza also bagged the prize for informer but without much delay on April 29, 1989, a quotation gang shot dead Hamza near Poinachi in Kanhangad. This was the first murder in Kerala for betrayal in gold smuggling.

Since the gang war became the worst and controversy erupted over the Crime Branch probe helping the assailants, the investigation was handed over to the CBI officer Ramesh. Since 1985 periods, he had been in investigating the smuggling practices in Mumbai and Kerala states. He is expecting the ruling party to change in India so that he could speak about this issue.

Luigi once again recaptured Mumbai with the help of Rahman, who is forced to help him as he killed some of his men in Mumbai, after taking down Pathan Shetty and Ahmed Askar's gang members. As revenge for betrayal, Luigi kills his North Chennai associates and takes the throne as the kingpin of Mumbai and North Chennai.

Slowly, Mumbai turned into the "cocaine capital of India." Since, Drug enforcement agencies were raiding the smugglers in USA, UK, Australia, and Japan, they were finding a safe heaven zone for the drug business.

Since Pottasium Permanganate is easily got from Mumbai, Rahman joins hands with Luigi and they sold several drugs and guns along with the gold in Mumbai. Gun smuggling too was on the rise in Chennai and Mumbai states. Luigi's name creates widespread fear and panic among the Indian states from 1999-to 2000 after he had killed Pathan Shetty. There was no one to oppose him.

When Anjali Deshmukh asked him, "Tell me the truth. How did you capture Mumbai with Rahman's help?"

Luigi says, "He has met Mansoor and made a perfect plan. He formed a team and with their help, they slowly executed the plan with some Customs official's help. As per the plan, they took off the henchman of Ahmed Askar and Pathan Shetty brutally before meeting Rahman."

PRESENT:

"Except for Askar and Rahman, there is no one to oppose Luigi. Am I right?"

Adhithya looks into the newspaper articles and said: "Your perception is wrong mam. Luigi has to face the actual problems after taking down Pathan Shetty."

NOVEMBER 2000:

CBI OFFICE, MUMBAI:

 "Sir. Pathan Shetty and a few more dreaded gangsters are killed in Mumbai and North Chennai. Recent news came from us sir" said Karthikeyan IPS. Hearing this, CBI officer Ramesh asked him: "Which batch are you Karthikeyan?"

"1995 batch sir."

"I am the 1980s. Since 1980 I am working as a CBI officer in Mumbai and Kerala and studying the gangsters. We can't change this file's color. We have to wait and work for it." 

DMSS PARTY OFFICE, MAHARASHTRA:

Meanwhile, Mansoor meets Minister Manoj Deshpande for discussing the upcoming election. But, Manoj leaves a warning to Mansoor about the rising stature and popularity of Gujarat Chief Minister-turned Prime Minister candidate Mahendran Pandey, who had helped and brought in several measures for his people. He promises people to revoke Kashmir's special constitution and Article 370.

As he rigorously conducts for his political party, Mansoor warned Luigi about it. But, he doesn't listen to his words and is confident that, nothing would happen to him. A few days later, Luigi comes to know that, drugs consignment and gold biscuits haven't come due to several issues. Hence, he asked his men to continue the work at the seaport and observe carefully.

This decision not only upsets Mansoor but also rejects him to the core. He says, "Or else, die within the sea. I will take care of your family. Despite getting this much status, why are you running behind power and gold? For whom are you doing these things?"

Luigi takes Mansoor and Anjali Deshmukh to the graveyard, which he has brought back to the backside of their bungalow at Aurangabad Street, in which they are residing currently. When standing at his father's cemetery, Luigi recalls his childhood life and tells Mansoor: "Bhai. Everybody who comes from the gangster life- they want what that man in the suburbs wants. Nice family, nice house, nice cars, bills paid, kids in school. Food on the table and Nothing more. But, I wanted to fulfill the promise given to my father."

Luigi's childhood life was hell. His father got his eyes operated on more than two times in his childhood and teenage. Luigi's mother didn't take care of him and Luigi. She was money-minded and selfish. After grabbing his father's property through cheating and betrayal, she chases them out with the help of her relatives, whom she has brainwashed and brought under her control. They were left inroads. 

Luigi was shown partiality by his mother, who gave much focus to her relatives and their children, turning him into a brute and thus, growing to hate his relatives.

Marriage at 35 years, betrayal at 40 years. His life was full of battles and tragedy. He suffered a stroke because of this and was bedridden for 2 months, until his death. The last words that he gave to Luigi remained stronger in his heart and he is determined to win the promise, that he had given.

Luigi turns to Anjali and said: "A guy told me one time. Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner." He leaves the place. While one of Luigi's men said: "No one dares to stop Luigi's journey unless and until his father comes." Anjali proposes her love to Luigi hearing and they both get married.

The night, they consummate their marriage by starting with a kiss and ending up nude in a blanket. Luigi said: "I love you eternal Anjali." She smiled at him.

FEW YEARS LATER:

2000:

Meanwhile, Mahendran Pandey takes charge as the Prime Minister of India after 1997 general elections. He works for the Kashmir special constitution issue with the help of some teams personally without letting this known to the media or the other public. He keeps the info confidential. At the same time, CBI officer Ramesh meets him in the Prime Minister's Office and explains all about Luigi and his ruthless criminal activities:

Criminal gangs in Tamil Nadu have been in touch with their counterparts in Mumbai and northern states for a long time, and this has led to an exchange of human resources. We have information that there are even a couple of well-connected agents who sent youngsters from Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, and Madurai to cities like Mumbai for Luigi's specific operations. There have been some vital indications of the Chennai-Mumbai criminal link in the recent past. Nagendran, C.D.Mani, Pathan Shetty, and several other gangsters were ruthlessly murdered by Luigi. However, his face has never been seen or drawn by many people, due to the fear and respect, they have for him.

Ahmed Askar and several other people including Rahman were fighting to recapture Mumbai. However, the people weren't able to capture the place again. Luigi has known well how to respect other religions and castes to sir. Since the situation turned worse due to several illegal activities taking place in Mumbai, Mahendran decides to close Luigi at once and for all people's happiness.

2000-2001:

He asked Ramesh to encounter Luigi's men residing in North Chennai and Mumbai. Further, he asked the CBI officials and other police officers to close the crime syndicates, controlled and run by Luigi.

Knowing the information from some sources in Mumbai, Ahmed Askar comes to Mumbai with his men to finish off Luigi as a vengeance, before the government could take him down. Rahman, who was threatened by Luigi also sends his men to support Askar as a retribution for his previous acts. At the same time, Anjali announces her pregnancy, while Luigi was packing drugs and gold in a box. However, Ahmed fatally shoots her and she died on the spot.

Depressed and dejected over her death, Luigi fights off Ahmed's men and kills all of them. Despite getting injured badly, he shoots Ahmed to his brutal death using an AK-47. Mansoor closes Anjali's eyes and Luigi goes to the Parliament office.

"Luigi's enemies have died. Then, why should he go for Parliament office?" Sahana asked Adhithya at present.

Adhithya said: "There is one more enemy here mam."

PARLIAMENT OFFICE, NEW DELHI:

At the Parliament Office, when Mahendran was regretting and speaking about the Kashmir Pandits' exodus, notorious gangsters of Mumbai, and criminal activities in India, Luigi enters the discussion room and points the gun toward Mahendran. But, immediately turns it towards Manoj Deshpande. As a minister, Manoj Deshpande was very angry and furious against the underworld of Mumbai and North Chennai. Since they used him as a puppet for their crimes and just paid him off.

Using their enmity and vengeance to his advantage, Manoj created problems and scuffles between Ahmed Askar and his fellow gangs in hope that, they all would fight with each other and die. Since some of his plans backed off, he brought in North Chennai gangsters to Mumbai and further, strengthened his plans. As this too failed, he deliberately loses the election and brought in Mahendran for power. Knowing all this, Luigi was silent as insisted by Mansoor. Now, he shoots Manoj to death in front of Mahendran's eyes.

After the cremation of Anjali, Luigi transfers his money, shares, and property to the old home and orphanage trusts and gives some of his money share to Mansoor. Taking some gold and drugs with him on the ship, he drives the ship towards the Indian Ocean borders from Jawaharlal Nehru Port.

At the same time, Mahendran issues a death warrant against Luigi and orders the Indian Army to kill him. The Indian Army officials went to his house telling, "Approaching the house...."

"We are breaking the door. We are breaking the door."

"We are opening the door. The forces are going inside the house."

Prime Minister and Ramesh hear the instructions.

"Sir. Luigi is not here. The room is empty" said Major Jaisurya to which Ramesh asked: "Repeat. Repeat that."

"Luigi is not here sir. There is no sign of his men too, sir."

Thinking for a while, Ramesh asked himself: "Where has he gone?"

FEW HOURS LATER:

"This is Captain Prakash Ingalagi. The commanding officer of INS Vikrant. Doing training drills in the Indian Ocean."

"Yes, Captain."

"Heard that you are searching for a criminal named Luigi."

"Yes, captain."

"We got fax. Luigi is here in the Indian Ocean."

"There was only one place to hide the money Luigi earned. He started to that place."

"Captain. He is the most wanted criminal. He should not escape at any cost." Jaisurya said to which Prakash Ingalagi replied: "Sorry to say this Major. But I don't think that he is trying to escape."

"What are you saying, Captain?"

"Yes. We have received the fax from within Luigi's Ship."

As Prime Minister and the Indian Army are listening carefully, Prakash further tells: "He is headed directly to us." Amidst the heavy rains, the Indian Navy watches his ship through binoculars. While Luigi drinks heavily on the ship.

"He has sent the same fax to Americans and Indonesians too, sir."

"Turn around the ship." The Americans and Indonesians said.

"They are also going towards Luigi's ship."

"Change the channel. You are about to enter the international waters from the Indian waters. Turn off your engines and prepare for surrender...I repeat. Turn off your engines and prepare for surrender. This is your last warning. Turn off your engines and prepare for surrender. Or we will fire!"

"Luigi is not responding to the orders, Major. The US Navy and Indonesian Navy are closing in. We are waiting for your orders."

"Orders sir."

With tears, Prime Minister orders to fire Luigi's ship. He sits dejectedly by holding his head.

Luigi kisses the chain, that his father gave him in his childhood days. While Prakash ordered: "Fire!"

The ship launches the fire against Luigi's ship.

"That day, two incidents happened: Mumbai's crime syndicate got split and the history of Luigi also came to end." (Narration)

Luigi drowns in the ocean along with the gold and drugs, which are lost to date.

PRESENT:

"Once a gangster, always a gangster. He fulfilled the promise given to his father. Through the same ship sailor he met, my father learned everything about Luigi and decided to write a book about him. Father should feel proud to have a good son mam." Adhithya concluded the history of Luigi. While, Sahana had tears in her eyes, after seeing some news articles about Luigi.

"Every gangster has a dark side in his life. I realize this by seeing these newspapers." As she said, Adhithya smiled and said: "I generally don't like gangsters. As they do extortion, murders, and several ruthless activities. But, I now realize their dark life, which forces them to do these things."

At the same time, a cameraman who was recording everything finds out Luigi: Chapter 3- The Final Draft book, written by Rajendran along with the tagline, "Luigi's other crimes in 8 countries- that includes UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, USA and Europe." In further mention as: "1998 to 2001."
