Lady In A White Saree

This is an incident of late forty and forty five years back. That was an era where we had no source of entertainment as today. People watched cinemas in the talkies for entertainment. All were crazy to watch movies that too first day first show attracted people.

We were in school at that time and had just stepped into our teens. There was a hit cinema of Dilip Kumar in the talkies. We all wanted to see the that cinema but we had to take permission from our parents. We knew they would not allow us. So we went to one of our uncle on whom all had faith and whatever he said nobody denied.

So myself and my friends went to this uncle and expressed our feeling to see that cinema 'Ganga Jamuna' . Uncle was so sweet, he at once agreed that he will take all of us to the cinema. 

Next day uncle came to my house and told my parents that he will take me and my friends to see the cinema. My friends parents too agreed as uncle was going with us.

It was Friday and uncle told us today we shall go for the movie. We were so excited . But when we reached there in the evening we did not get the ticket as the movie was running house full. But we got the ticket for night show. We were happy and came home to go later. Parents complained that night show is not safe, you can go the next day. But we were adamant and no one could stop us.

We reached the talkies and watched the movie. It was really wonderful movie. When we came out of the hall, it was almost11.30 p.m. We couldn't get any taxi or rickshaw. Then uncle told us let's start walking. We started walking and talking about the movie.. But as we walked, uncle told us to take the short cut so that we can reach home fast. We knew the shortcut road was going through the graveyard. As we walked we felt scared and held each other's hands. Uncle was leading us. As we reached near the graveyard, we saw a lady clad in a white saree and was standing beside the road. We were so scared that we couldn't walk. Uncle said " keep walking boys don't stop." As we walked we saw that lady walking towards the graveyard. We understood who she was. Without uttering a word we all began running almost panting and wet with sweat. Anyhow we reached home and our parents were waiting for us. Seeing our faces they understood that something had happened. As it was too late we went to sleep almost shivering.

Next day we got up and could not go to school as it was too late. I saw uncle sitting and talking with my parents. As I came uncle told me there was an accident a few months back. And a lady had died on the spot. Now she is seen roaming there at night. Till then my friends had come and knowing this we all were so afraid and we promised we will not go to night shows. This horror scene will remain with us all through our life.
