The pale crescent moon shone like a silvery pendant in the night sky.The hustle and bustle of the city seemed to an end as an expansive blanket of stars inundated the atmosphere. Night is considered to be a beautiful time for lovers wherein love blossoms and the lovers yearn for each other's embrace .Meanwhile in the Whitmore villa ,situated in the heart of Campbell street, could be heard a dulcet tone that penetrated the deafening silence in the house.
"I'll be perfectly alright honey, don't worry"said the diminutive dame and the telephone speaker emitted a hoarse whisper of the caller in return."Bye Raine, take care" were the last words spoken as 58 yrs old Gina or usually acknowledged as Mrs. Whitmore called it a night, surrendering the house into the hands of eerie stillness.
Two blocks away was perched a man in his front yard , plunged into the deep thoughts while gazing the scattered glitters in the night sky. Mr. Wilson Ashmore, a retired lieutenant colonel was reminiscing his army times when a silhouette a few metres away distracted him. Following it, he was perplexed when a shady figure stopped by a house who no longer had any visitors... The 'Whitmore Villa'. As the person moved a bit, the streetlight no longer casted a shadow and revealed a burglar who had now successfully entered the house premises. Sensing a trouble, Wilson followed the man into the residence. Soon a feminine shriek made its way to his ears which caused his feet to run on the way. He stopped to an image of the thief pointing the shank at the Mrs Whitmore's neck.
'Don't hurt her' screamed the old lad , startling the both. The burglar, following the command of his reflex actions made his way to the colonel, resulting into a brawl. As the police patrol sirens disturbed the street's silence, the former fled outside but not before pushing Mr. Ashmore which ensued him to fall backwards, revealing a wooden leg. Gina was left stunned by the disclosure and scurried to help him. Looking at the fresh cut on his neck, she flinched as the past memories flooded her brain but still managed to fetch the first aid. This gesture of hers didn't go unnoticed by Wilson. 'It's okay, Mrs Ashmore. I'll look after it' he said in hurry, not used to somebody looking after him. However, it didn't help as the lady caressed the wound gently causing their hands to brush. A shiver ran through Wilson's body at this contact for the first time in his life. As the lady was applying ointment, Wilson felt a flutter in his heart as this was the first time somebody showed affection for him. 'I didn't know about your ..um.. leg Mr Ashmore' said Gina."Sometimes life doesn't turn out as expected"remarked the man passively to which Gina couldn't help but agree more, after all her life's reality came out be similar. While she was engrossed in tending the injury, Wilson(for the first time in his life) couldn't help but feel collywobbles at such a proximity .After nursing, he turned back to his residence whereas the woman went to sleep but not before thanking Mr Ashmore, only to feel somewhat restless by the brief exchange with him.
The next morning, Wilson was about to head for evening exercise when the door bell seeked his attention. The door revealed Mrs. Whitmore with a meek smile plastered across her face and hands carrying a casserole. After exchanging the pleasantries, he invited her inside the house. 'I bought a little something for you. Last night.. well.. I would have been in a great trouble if it weren't for you ' said Gina offering the blueberry cheesecake."You didn't have to do it, really, it was nothing."replied the man."By the way, I don't think I'll be able to finish off this huge dessert by myself, why don't you help?" suggested Wilson, leaving himself surprised at this sudden valour. During the supper, they both were intrigued by each other's life as the conversation led into new discoveries. "So, a colonial war took toll of your left leg seven years ago in mere 3 seconds?"Gina said in utter surprise. " Yes, and that's when I decided to return to my hometown"."By the way, the place where your daughter lives was my first headquarter'' said the man. ''Oh! I see, that's why you know so much about the region.'' replied she. The duo relished each other's presence and while they were engrossed in having a hearty conversation, somewhere blossomed an emotion such as affection and friendship, a bond which was considered impossible to be woven under such short span of time. In her unabridged life,Gina didn't receive the love she deserved . Her perception was completely opposite to the reality of her married life which was nothing but a bitter experience inculcating domestic violence by a male chauvinist husband. She couldn't reminisce her life with Mr. Whitmore without recalling the acerbing moments of him abusing her physically or mentally with his possessiveness and dominance but here she was sitting after all this time, with a gentleman unlike her husband. As for Wilson,an orphan who didn't have any family or friends, he had never encountered such a soulful proximity with anybody in his entire life time. Later, The duo decided to go for an evening walk the next day before going their own ways.
Bright cherry blossoms were beautifully contrasting the dusky hue leaving the spectators in awe. As the petals descended the track, Gina and Wilson flourished a bond that was subtly beautiful in its own way. The day successfully drew the two closer and marked the beginning of their official friendship.Months later, each passing day, the couple grew closer only to lead into something more than friendship, a modest understanding. They developed a relation which was not so easy to infer. The maturity of their age when blended with the teenage attributes ,formed a perfect combination of a profound yet tender affection . Usually people consider this affection as love wherein two people fall for each other yet bearing aloft each other in front of society , wherein the pair of individuals belonging from two entirely distinct backgrounds coalesce into one universe devoting their lives for each other, the only difference in this love story being that both Gina and Wilson found their true and first love at such a mature age, giving all the more reason to society so as to believe in love.
