“Listen carefully. Try not to face them. If you encounter them, tell them we’ve already donated directly to the government.”

“OK, but will it not bring down our reputation in the neighborhood? I mean you, being a rich businessman, would not donate….. ”

“Worry not. The reason will be sufficient. Their need will be fulfilled. We have performed our duty, though not through them; and it shouldn’t bother them.”

“But it bother us; we haven’t made any donations in truth. My conscience would prick me. We should donate at least three or five.”

“You could’ve shown this trifling ‘concern’ if you had been earning. Since I am the sole earner, I’m rightfully the only financial decision-maker. The business has come to a standstill since lockdown. Three months have passed and we haven’t redeemed our losses yet. You can’t understand; it’s far more than your idle doltish powwow.”

“But we have opulent mammon in store. God has given us to serve, not just to save as a niggard.”

“OH JUST SHUT UP! Never dare to butt in my savings again.”

Sheetal was ready to try more to convince Manoj for donating some money to help people fight against Coronavirus, but he wasn’t ready to listen or understand. Despite the long conversation, he was adamant. He wasn’t in favor of donating. His eyes were terrorized only to see he loses, not the squall of those who were hit hard by the lethal malaise.

Ten years old Raju had been listening to the whole conversation covertly. He had been hearkening the same sad news and seeing the same terrible sights for the last few days, and he knew that the time is not conducive to such discussions. He was sad at his father’s decision.

The doorbell rang, and a donation box raised as the door was opened. Sheetal stood speechless and embarrassed. She was going to give the false reasons and explanations for her planned refusal to the helpful deed and gesture of the neighbors, but the two distant collectors had got their answers before Sheetal made any excuse. They had been going through such void expressions and silent answers before they said anything. They looked at each other with a look of pathos and embarrassment. Sheetal was trying hard to make her lie seem true, but she wasn't good at it. They, however, in turn, gave her a small smile, which was dominated by sadness and frown. No sooner did they turn away than Raju came out calling them loudly.

“Please take my piggy bank as a donation. This is all that I can donate……”
