Jeff had been homeless for years. The basic things of life- food, clothing and shelter was an unimaginable dream for him. He never had any work to do, nobody offered him any permanent job. He was different from other homeless people in the town. He was educated to the level where he can understand and speak two foreign languages fluently. His day would start early morning before most of the civilised would wake up. The reason is to go to the public toilets to get himself cleaned before people would start chasing him away. There was nothing known as ‘average’ in his life as he was always deprived of the necessities.

Winters and summers were harsh on him. To be exposed to the bare heat and bare coldness was always his nightmare. People loathed his appearance as his clothes were ragged and untidy. His hair long and unkempt nails looked menacing for the general public. He was struck in the vicious cycle of poverty, isolation and desperateness. The only survival strategy he learnt right now was to pickpocket.

His first attempt was rather successful. Jeff had managed to enter a pretty huge crowd at a concert. He focused his attention on one guy who was half drunk. All he had to do was to bump the guy’s hip and touch his shoulder with his right hand and in the meanwhile, his left hand unzipped his backpack hung over his shoulder. Job did and over time he learnt nuances of the art.

Jeff was seated back at his temporary shelter at a construction site. Compared to the harshness of the roads this place was far more than comfortable. It helped him stay low as he would come at night and go away early morning without anybody noticing him. As he was going through the day’s earnings he came across the bag that he had looted a week back. Jeff had forgotten all about it and he saw it now. As he opened the bag he found a VR glass and a mobile phone.

He laid back on the floor with the VR glasses put on and he slowly switched on the phone.

Dreams….

He was at the Christmas carnival hidden among the crowds with his eyes scanning for the right victim. It was then a girl bumped onto him. As he was about to address her, he felt a pouch being dropped into his pocket. The girl had disappeared in the crowd within a second. Jeff felt deceived and defeated by the fact that someone conned him with his own trick. After he returned back to his place he took out the pouch and opened it.

Inside the pouch was a miniature globe and he was surprised looking at it. Thoughts went on in his head. Why was this dropped in my pocket?. Why? Why?. Something was different with the globe and he could see it. Suddenly a light flashed on the globe that glimmered and it read ” Rotate and pick a place”. The unexpected lighting got him scared, then he looked at it and laughed. What is it all about, is it funny?.

The light changed colour and it read “Don’t delay, rotate and pick up a place. This is the last chance”. Jeff felt puzzled and as he was thinking, his left hand involuntarily rotated the globe. The globe after rotating few rounds came to a halt. Jeff felt like floating on air, as he felt weightless and his body kept turning side to side to keep balance. There were trash cans along with him floating in the air. Occassionally they banged against him and he let out screams that were heard in whimpers. He has transported to another dimension accidentally. The place was different with different life forms.

There were elephant-like animals but their nails were a metre long and tails resembled a cat’s tail. Dog-like animals were extremely aggressive hunting down lions and tigers. Tigers and lions were cuddling with their masters who were gigantic monsters. They ate trash from the earth as food….

Jeff woke up from sleep and he never knew what he dreamt…
