Are We Indian's Really Free..

It was 5 in the evening and I was getting ready to prepare the dinner when my 16-year-old daughter Priyanka came rushing into the kitchen and with utmost seriousness and urgency dragged me into her room, " Mom, please tell me as January 26th is approaching, which WhatsApp status is more patriotic and if this OOTT (outfit of the day) is good enough, after all, been an influence I have certain responsibly". I chuckled as nowadays whenever a new festival or event approaches Priyanka has been fully prepared with all her props for her 92 ( and counting) Insta followers.

Seeing all these thoughts popped in my mind in the next two weeks majority of us will change our WhatsApp DP to tricolour, many will post a congratulatory message on their status, Facebook wall or will make an Instagram reel portraying their happiness and patriotism but are we the Indians Free?

Is it enough to be a constitutionally independent country? Are we living with complete freedom, are we really liberated?

"Mom, Mom where are you lost, tell me is all my preparations ok, should I change the song, is my orange shirt ok or is it too orange." As I nodded in agreement she began testing the correct angle for her ring light and I was once again in my own thoughts.

Since childhood I was very interested in politics I was an avid supporter of women rights, and the reality is that it's been almost 74 years since we got Independence from the British Rule but still, after these many years does our students have the freedom to select the career they want or do we still expect them to follow the "safe path''. Do our youngsters have the freedom to marry the one they want? Are social evils like caste, creed still not very much prevalent in our society?

Do our women feel the freedom, freedom from the atrocities against them? Are our kids free against crime? The alarming number of crimes against children speaks a horrific story. Have we got freedom from the communal tensions in our country? The majority of us don't even feel the freedom to even express ourselves even to our loved ones and friends, had that been the case then the number of suicides during the lockdown period had been substantially low.

We all really need to revisit our belief in being free and independent. We might have got independence but still, need to get freedom from the age-old clutches of our social evils and orthodox mentality. We need to be more tolerant towards other people who have a different set of ideas, beliefs, political views than ours.

As Priyanka started rehearsing her steps from Vanda Mataram, I was jotted back to reality, I could only hope that one day India will truly be Independent of all evils.
