“Russia declares war on Ukraine” – This was breaking news around the globe when this horrendous war started. Actually, the main attention of all of the superpowers of the world including USA, China and India was on an even more terrific idea – The possibility of World War – III.

Just minutes after the initial attack, World War – III memes were inundating social media such as Twitter, Meta and WhatsApp.

Before we get into this topic, we need to understand that once Russia too, was a part of a bigger country called as The Soviet Union or USSR which also included other countries such as Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine etc.

The Cold War was a period of geopolitical tension between the US and USSR. It followed World War II and started in 1947 and ended in 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed. And from this dissolution, present day Russia and Ukraine have emerged.

There are many reasons for Russia to threaten Ukraine. The two major reasons are as follows:

Ukraine was planning to join NATO (The North Atlantic Treaty Organization) which would have provided extra protection and would have supplied ammunition to Ukraine, which would then pose a threat for Russia. The escalation of this tension has resulted in this war.

The second reason is that Ukraine has a harbor. Russia is surrounded by land, and thus, does not have harbors. It also affects their profit. By conquering Ukraine, they can utilize the harbor.

Russia and USA know about the effects of a World War, as they have experienced two of them.

World War II started with Germany conquering Poland, and then UK and France declaring retaliation against Adolf Hitler’s reign. The involvement of other countries escalated the tension and then a war broke out.

Nine countries of the world which are USA, Russia, China, North Korea, Israel, India, Pakistan, UK and France have nuclear power.

Other countries know that the involvement of other allies in the war between two countries is what triggers a World War. So, the biggest bet of Russia and Ukraine will be to keep other countries from involving. Of course, other countries can help, but attacking would result in a huge World War of nuclear power, space wars and cyber warfare.

World War II ended with USA attacking the cities of Japan which are Hiroshima and Nagasaki with nuclear bombs. It brought World War II and the Nazi atrocities to an end because USA was the only country by then to have nuclear power. Other countries recognized fighting anymore totally regardless.

World War III would just put a full stop to the world as we know it today. And what is even worse is that no one would win! The middle - eastern countries would fight each other just to spoil the Earth’s ecosystem. The four scenarios which could start a World War yet again are as follows:

Tensions between USA and China

Tensions between USA and Russia

Tensions between India and Pakistan

North Korea

Germany surrendered in the end of World War I, but as Great Britain had most of the world under their command by then, they were the most affected.

Millions of soldiers died, and the economy plunged. The industrial revolution made economic and technological development as well as development of infrastructure, which made the world recover from both of the World Wars.

If you look at the history, you could see many kinds of wars and tensions. Not only USA and Russia, the rivalry also goes along with the allies of both of these countries.

Take Vietnam, for instance. The Vietnam War was long and expensive, but to no extent. These wars are useless. Plus, the 1971 India – Pakistan war and the 1962 India – China wars were disastrous. The fall of The Berlin Wall took place in 1989. England once ruled the whole world. The Maratha kings fought many wars against other kingdoms.

The conflicts between USA and Iraq were dumbfounding. USA has also attacked Al Qaeda in Afghanistan to pursue the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. And recently, the Taliban's have conquered Afghanistan!

During the Cold War, the Americans pursued the Apollo Mission. But exploration was only their minor target. They desperately wanted to beat the Russians in something or the other! The space race was won by America.

The Space Shuttle missions were pursued with the same target, but this time, their main ambition was to improve the technology needed to create a space station. Russia’s Mir Space Station acted as a stepping stone in building the ISS (The International Space Station).

During the Russia – Ukraine conflict, USA threatened Russia that they will make the ISS fall above their country as the operational time limit for the ISS is nearing, but this is just a hoax to threaten people as the ISS never passes above Russia.

The atomic bomb that caused destruction in Japan was built by the US. This ambitious idea was living far too long, but could not be pursued because of the terror of Hitler having such a destructive power under his thumb.

This involved many people including Albert Einstein, who is known as the uncle of the atomic bomb. This superpower is far more destructive than dynamite!

Later, this ambitious idea gave birth to the Manhattan project, which later resulted in the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

If, by any chances, World War III breaks out because of the conflicts between the three superpowers which are USA, Russia and China, this won’t be a normal war. This will be a nuclear war.

World Wars I and II were fought with tanks, rifles and guns, and were far less destructive than hypothetical World War III. The use of nuclear weapons in the fag ends of World War II didn’t matter, as only one country had it by then.

Later, the Russians tested their own atomic bomb. This was also a part of the Cold War, which followed World War II and ended when the Soviet Union collapsed.

Because many countries have those nuclear weapons, World War III would be nuclear. Radiation poisoning would lead to harmful mutations in the DNA of organisms and cancer would kill many people. All of the technology would be spoilt, and the aftermath of such a harmful nuclear war would bring clouds of harmful gasses into sight. They would block the sun and a nuclear winter would start. Black snow would fall from the skies. Many species will go endangered and extinct.

So, our best bet to avoid total destruction is to wipe out our ignorance, stay united and prevent another World War!
