An anecdote of a Teller

This is a short story on the life of Punit, a fictional character and any resemblance with name and life is purely coincidental. Punit came from a quintessential Indian Middle class family. He was an above-average good student. After completing graduation he got selected for an Engineering course and commenced his studies. In the meantime as was the trend in the eighties decade to sit for any competitive exams that were advertised in the papers he had appeared for a job as a teller in a bank. In due course, he got selected and because of family pressure, he had to drop out of the engineering course and join the bank. Because his parents were advanced in age and doubted their ability to fund Punit's education during their lifetime. So reluctantly Punit reported for duty to the bank as a teller. In those days it was called cashier. Punit continued his job with diligence. He was hard working and very soon got to the nuances of the operations of a commercial bank. Customers of the Bank were very fond of his friendly and helpful nature. The supervisors also developed a deep liking for him. In those days computers in the banks were a new thing. Punit developed his skills on the subject and became a data entry operator and excelled. His seniors egged him on to go for professional studies of the banking industry and sit for departmental promotional exams. Soon Punit became an officer and got posted as a Trade Finance specialist in the overseas branch of the bank at Mumbai. In Mumbai, he showed his mettle and in few years and after a couple of promotions became a Manager. Banking had become a passion for Punit and he kept on his value addition down the years. He also periodically contributed written articles for the magazine of a popular banking institute. He developed a passion for automation in the banking industry. But as is human nature there had grown quite a number of detractors who were jealous of his achievements and abilities. His enemies connived with the management and sidelined him to an unimportant section of the bank. Initially, Punit was crestfallen for this dramatic change. But he made a resolve to face the challenge head-on. He began thinking of ways to work out strategies for the bank's benefit. Recently he had come across a lot of fraudulent activities in the bank. He made up his mind to fight this menace. A lot of ATM Fraud was occurring and customers were being subjected to a lot of hardships. Punit started browsing the Internet for notes and started research on the ways the hackers were operating. He had the support of the Banks head of IT and was secretly asked to strategies the banks way forward in ma managing this ATM Fraud menace. Punit started visiting ATMs of various banks and started study of possible ways of compromising of the machines. Fortunately, on his such numerous sojourns to the ATMs, he found a suspicious item attached to one machine. He quickly made a pictorial record of it and submitted his report to the bank. The police were also now regular visitors to the banks as a number of cases was rising and they had to do the investigation. The Police then got this report of Punit's and started investigating from the lead generated. The police can do what common people cannot do because of their resources. Soon the fraudsters were arrested. Punit was felicitated by the bank and the Police department. Customers heaved a sigh of relief and kept praising Punit.
