A Letter To My Future Self

Dear Future Me, 

The next time that you start to fall in love, remind yourself of the last time.

Remember how you loved him, never having expected the dark hole of a broken heart. Remember how you planned out the future.

Together ...

Remember how hard it was to balance school, family, friends, and him. But you always were all up for it.

Remember what it’s like to worry about being loved by someone else and how freeing it is to live your life once you let go of the one that's gone.

Remember how many times you decided to forgo buying yourself that accessory you’ve been eyeing in order to buy him that book for his birthday.

Remember his hand behind the small of your back, barely touching you, the first time you went on a date. And the tickle that ran down your spine as a ripple effect.

Remember how he never did that again.

Remember your panic attack in the middle of the night when his voice from the other end consoled you that you had nothing to worry about because he had met the girl of his dreams. 

And remember what else he told you a little over a few years later that changed everything.

Remember wondering how much he was willing to put up with and how you never considered how much you were willing to put up with.

Remember all the promises he made by the light of the moon

And how he broke them all as the sun shone on his face.

Remember how you cried for hours the day you found out he was in a relationship with someone who wasn’t you. It was a day that came way too soon. Remember how it hurt to be replaced Before you could totally accept the departure.

Remember that you need to shorten your emotions handling lead time now on because no one will wait. 

Remember he was your first love and your first heartbreak. Accept and acknowledge that he always will be. 

Remember that you have to be there for yourself. Remember that you are the only person who'll keep the promise to be by you in the future.

Remember the future is yours, and yours alone.
