I just feel like the solus Pluto, who is there in the space but can’t find its own space in the solar system. So, it has been a year since I have gone back to my village. I couldn’t breath there. Yes! I was unjust to them.

I still remember those days with Swastik, when we used to relish each and every second of our lives. As any other day, I woke up, had my ‘chai’ and went to work with Swastik. On reaching the office, we were informed that a new lady inspector – ‘Miss Amayesha Sharma’ was appointed to the village. On the way back to home; I could clearly hear those misogynist men sitting under the big banyan tree saying proudly—“Women don’t deserve these high posts. They look good only under the veil. These bitches don’t have any right to control us.” I don’t know what stopped me to say that they were completely wrong.

Next very day, Swastik’s mobile got lost, so we went to file a F.I.R. .There we saw Miss Amayesha for the first time. Swastik gave her all the required information and she asked him to get back to her next day. Next day, I was wonderstruck too see Swastik, as he was wearing that shirt which he believed was very fancy. By staring at her alluring and constant grin; I understood that something was absolutely fishy.

We went back to the police station and Amayesha told us to come with her to investigate the case. I never saw Swastik happier than that very moment so I made an excuse and left both of them alone. I was anxious all over the day and couldn’t wait to hear from Swastik. Later in the evening, I heard knock on door. I knew Swastik was there. But this time, my guess was wrong. With Swastik, there was Amayesha. We gossiped all over the night. Amayesha told me how fun-loving Swastik was. They both couldn’t stop praising each other. She told us how badly her family treated her and how they were forcing her to marry an unknown guy. These were the reasons why she escaped from the house.

Day by day, I could see both of them engrossing in love with each other. Those treasuring days finished soon. Amayesha was fed up of listening the rumors passing about her that claimed she has escaped from her house. Our village was not accepting her as an inspector just because she was a woman. I don’t know how she was able to put that grin on her face despite of the detestation. When Swastik’s family knew about the relationship of their son with Amayesha; they put millions of questions to Swastik. Swastik tried his level best to make his parents understand the real side of Amayesha. But he failed.

I knew deep down, that there is no space for Amayesha in this misogynist world. I questioned myself why the families don’t understand? Why the society doesn’t change? And why we have to sacrifice in the end? Why?

At that very moment, Swastik packed his bag and decided to live separate with Amayesha. He ran towards Amayesha’s house. Swastik’s big brother took a rod. I scuffled with him. But in no time, he stabbed his own brother. All I could see were those eyes filled with infinite love longing to see his love in his last moments.

I ran as fast as I could. She was not opening the door so I broke open it. That moment, I felt numb. I was not ready to see that Amayesha hung herself. I put her down. My eyes veered in the suicide letter. I read- ‘Society doesn’t accept me. I have failed trying. I am quitting. Sorry Swastik. I failed you. I hope you forgive me. Thanks for your infinite love in this little time. I love you.’

I ran back towards Swastik’s house. My every breath was giving me hope that Swastik was alive. I reached there. Swastik was taking his last breath. All I could say to him was “ Your love isn’t futile. You both can live peacefully now.” I failed as a friend. I failed as citizen. I decided to leave that village and live in the between mountains nearer to them.

What Caesar told to Brutus was absolutely true--“ Dear Brutus, the fault is not in our stars but in ourselves.”
