The Rainbow Tree
The Rainbow Tree
It all started with a drizzle
And it’s been raining all morning
It was empty skies before
but the clouds are now like a prism
bursting from their pores.
It started with a bit of violet
all shiny and velveteen
and a dash of an impatient indigo
mixing with a beautiful blue and an envious green
a flaming orange in the middle
meeting a charming yellow
and a rebellious red on top
completing the rainbow’s sheen.
The clouds now have a bow,
And shards of rain thrust forward like arrows,
Falling on the earth and the fields below..
I feel like scaling the mountains
And seeing what’s beyond
Is it cold and damp like here?
Or is it a parched and dry ground?
I follow the rainbow
Starting at its one end
I walk towards the mountains
but now I’m cold and fully drenched.
I start climbing, a rope in my hand
And with each fall, the harder I land,
But I make it to the top anyway
And bring out my net
To capture the rainbow that I'd just met.
The land on the other side
I can see from the top
It’s wet just like here, but there’s something wide and free,
The land’s brown and green,
But the other end of the rainbow is dipped in the blue sea.
I throw the net on the rainy skies
And bundle the colors into a milky white
I run down the mountains towards my town
And hide my net with the rainbow
A few feet below the ground.
It takes a few years for the seed to grow
Into a rainbow tree, all colorful and new
the trunk is a beautiful violet and green
and the branches are in shades of yellow and blue
I see the flowers in hues of indigo, orange and red
In spring they bloom and in autumn they shed.
The rainbow tree becomes the center of town
Where birds and bees and people circle around
My town becomes known as ‘The Rainbow Town’
And people keep visiting all year around
The tree keeps growing and so does the town.
And it is decades later that the tree touches the sky,
The roots start shrinking along the trunk
The branches and leaves and flowers bundling along the way,
As the tree finds its way into the cloudy skies,
the colors get merged again into a milky white.
It starts with a drop but it drizzles again
And within a few minutes it starts to rain
The clouds break into two and from within the crack
Out comes a rainbow, its two sides stretching
To the earth and back.
