The Host

The Host

Wild hair all over her face, Hiding ugly scars,

Bitten, broken, dirty nails scratching the walls.

The sound of those dirty feet coming for me,

Thump, Thump, Thump, heavy, slow steps.

Her high-pitched, maniacal, loud giggling,

Echoing all over the house as she moves.

She is making herself known, taunting me,

Informing me that she is here, she is here.

Shivering, shaking, horrified, I wait, I wait,

Heart beating wildly, trembling, I wait, I wait.

Clawing at my hair, Rubbing my arms, I wait,

Tears running down my face, I wait, I wait.

Holding myself, trying to assure myself, I wait,

Closing my eyes, rocking myself, I wait, I wait.

I wait till I feel warm, fast breaths on my face,

Peeking from between my fingers; it is over.

My mind unable to comprehend, what is this?

The floor in front of me is empty, where is she?

Cupping my hands, I splash my face and neck,

Cold water dripping from my hot, flushed skin.

Sink is pristine and lights are on, that’s weird,

I take a deep breath, looking at the mirror, I see.

Eyes that stare back at me, they are not mine,

Face that I see is not mine, this is not me, not me.

Smile curving on the face, teeth crooked, not straight,

Cheeks pale, not flushed, scars littering all over, I touch.

She won, She won, She won, We are one, we are one,

I lost, I lost, I lost, She is the host, the host, the host.
