When I Am Me
When I Am Me
I walk with my shoulders slumped, eyes lowered,
I hide from the world; it doesn’t understand me.
I am not normal, I am not like them, I am me,
I know I am different; I don’t understand it either.
The day taunts me, the light exposes my secrets,
Secrets, I try to keep, so desperately, I am scared.
But it’s the night that nurtures me, conceals me,
The darkness opens its arms for me to dissolve into.
In the darkness, nobody judges me, nobody scares me,
At night, I unleash myself, I let myself transform.
It’s the night that accepts me when my eyes glow red,
My hair turns to ropes of dark, its chains, its shackles.
My shoulders straighten and I command the sky,
I let the blackness run in my veins, I set them free.
I let the shadows do my dirty work, I just watch them,
I let them devour, devour humans who dare look at me.
I let my form grow, grow till it touches the sky and stars,
Till I feel empowered, till I am bigger than all of humanity.
It’s the night that accepts me when I fly into it, touching it,
It’s the darkness that hides the filth I coat my lips with.
But when the time comes it will be the day that I will rule over,
It will always be the light that I will capture when I am me.
