That Fateful Night...

That Fateful Night...

Celebrating his 18th birthday,

His friends wished him a future bright,

They tumbled noisily out the door,

To a horrific scene, that fateful night.

She stood surrounded by four grown men,

Eyes filled with tears, body quivering with fright.

Undaunted he stepped in, fearless his mien,

“Leave her alone,” he said, that fateful night.

They mocked, they threatened, they pushed him away,

He came back to stand for what was right.

Their blows felled him, their knives did slay

,

His blood stained the streets, that fateful night.

By his grave stood his parents, with grief replete,

Their hearts are heavy but nary a tear in sight.

Not on the war front or in a movie, but on the narrow street,

Their son had turned a hero, that fateful night.

For a moment, let’s stop, let’s ponder and think,

About the courage, he possessed, this gallant knight.

His conviction, his strength, let deep within us sink,

A lesson let us learn, from that fateful night.
