A Lockdown Sonnet
A Lockdown Sonnet
On a fine winter day, in December past, a little virus made its presence felt
Inch by inch, mile on mile, slowly did its tentacles spread
To the people an unseen specter, with its potency a nerve-wracking blow it dealt
A face masked, six feet apart it made closeness be looked upon with dread.
I heard your voice but missed your touch, separated by an impersonal screen
Whatsapp messages and video calls could only assuage the heart so much
Minute by minute we counted the days and remembered the happier times we had seen
To be close to each other again was a fervent wish for our hearts to the clutch.
As the lockdown lifts and we step out, my heart sings its only refrain,
After weeks and months of self-exile, how wonderful it is to be in your arms again.
