Soul Sister
Soul Sister
Jargons in the hands of time,
Traverse boundaries and get well-accepted,
Changing meanings can often mellow,
Just like ‘soul-sister’, a 1960s name for,
A black woman called out of empathy.
‘Soul’ connecting Black folk culture,
To customising ‘soul’ for uniqueness,
Train’s ‘Hey, Soul Sister’ takes the acknowledgement,
Of popularising it for a friend or sister,
Connected not by blood, but by spirit.
And, so now we surmise how it means,
A beyond-the-human realm, bond,
Who can read the mind and talk to the soul,
Who needs no explanation or words,
Yet, whose presence makes life fulfilling.
Let me relish and continue this 2000’s version,
And, shape and enhance womanhood,
Fetching a woman from anywhere,
A promise of trust and friendship,
Enabling her to reach out for the sky.
