Poor!!! Who???

My broken heart

Like the ripped cloth

Of a beggar on the street

Both of us unable

To hide our poverty,

His due to lack of wealth

Mine due to lack of love! 

The holes in my soul

Like the holes in his plate

That he uses to beg

Clear markers

Of our deprivation

He deprived of abundance

Me deprived of acceptance! 

My hollow eyes

Like his hollow stomach

Both wilting in hunger

His arising from need

Mine arising from greed

To fulfil desires! 

Who is more poor, 

I ask myself

As I stand in front of him

Looking for a reflection

Of my destitution 

In his desolate life

He, for the lack of home

Or me for the dearth of love?
