My Greatest Enemy
My Greatest Enemy
My intellect
Is my enemy No One,
Keeping me away
From true joy,
Making me run
After illusions innumerable,
Stimulating my base
Brutish instincts now,
Igniting my greed and wrath then,
Leading me into the trap fame today,
Preparing me to mistake
My meanness
For my greatness tomorrow...
Directing me to dance
This way and that,
Being my master puppeteer...
But when my own real Master
Took its place out of mercy for me
And my suffering,
I looked it in the face
And it cringed and surrendered
And fell flat at my feet,
And died like a fish
Gasping for breath
Being out of its aquarium,
And then my most
Merciful master destroyed its shelter,
I mean the aquarium,
Forever and ever.
