My Country

My Country

The word Hindustan, Bharat or India evokes a mix of feelings of pride, reverence, joy and an array of other emotions because they are the various names of my country, and I am identified with it. I am proud to be an Indian.

What to write about my country and where to begin? Can it be exhaustive? impossible.

I would like to touch upon the diversity in various aspects. Our country has diverse geographical regions, starting with snow clad mountains in the north, the great Himalayas, the plains of Uttar Pradesh, the Dessert of Rajasthan and the Deccan Plateux. There are beautiful beaches in the west and east all along its peninsular coast. Amazingly we have every type of geographical regions and associated climatic conditions in our country. Associated with the geography are the variations in the attire and customs and practices. Though, of late, the attire is attaining some uniformity across the country, the food is amazingly varied. Also, we have a diverse range of flora and fauna. The king of fruits, Mango grows here in a number of varieties.

The variety of wheat-based recipes of the north like the various    Parathas and varied meat items, Chole and Paneer items remain the speciality of this region. Down south the vada sambar, Humble idli, non-vegetarian food of Chettinadu is the speciality to name a few. In fact, all states have speciality cuisines of their own. There can be a never-ending list of speciality foods of various regions. Forget about tasting every item! I wonder if anywhere in the world one would get the diverse vegetarian food items as we get in India; not to forget mouth-watering sweets and savouries.

Another fascinating and interesting aspect of diversity in Indian culture is the variety of textiles/handlooms that exist and still hand made with exotic designs and patterns which are very unique to different parts of India. There are Kanjeevaram, Gadwal, Uppada, Narayanpet weaves in cotton and silk from South, there are Pythany sarees from Maharashtra, Kotas of Rajasthan, Banaras sarees from UP and a variety of cotton and silk weaves from Bengal and Northeastern states and last but not least, the Sambalpuris of Orissa.

There are 22 official languages in India and many more in use.    They bring in diversity and enrichment to literature. Even Music has regional flavours, with distinct Hidustani and Carnatic streams, Sufi, Qawwali, Ghazal, Mujra being some of the styles. A variety of instruments add to the diversity. There are morning ragas and evening ragas, ragas to suite different moods, seasons, and occasions. Oh! there is so much to Indian music, which is Devine and sacred and should be talked about only by a specialist and not by an ignorant like me. Same is the case with dance, Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi and Kathakali from south, Kathak from North, Odissi and Manipuri are some of the dance forms from different regions in India. Only in India culture, both Music and Dance are considered as media to reach God and therefore treated with reverence.

We can never forget, or we should not forget our struggle for independence from the hands of British. It is the sacrosanct achievement and result of sacrifice of several lives. Our representatives groomed us into one of the strong democracies and we cherish it.

In fact, we are into interesting times where we proudly boast that the political head of Britain is a person of Indian origin. It is a matter of pride that several Indians, Sundar Picchai and Bhaskar Nadella to name few, are heading big businesses globally. Indians are a force to recon with, globally, in the field of Business, Information technology, Research, Pharmaceuticals and Vaccine manufacture, to name a few. It is a matter of pride that our Prime minister had demonstrated that he is a global leader by sharing the essential medicines and other resources with needy countries, at the peak of the Pandemic

We have our own problems, and everything is not rosy. We are working on the problems of illiteracy, poverty, health which affect our people at large. The diversity in the country itself gives rise to divisive thinking and politicking bringing in unique set of problems. In spite of all this Ours is the world’s largest economy and most stable economies and growing in the face of the pandemic.

I wish to always carry this image of Vibrant, effervescent, pulsating with life, a happening place when I think of India… Jai Hind.
