Charu was still reeling from the shock of finding Vincent on her grandfather’s ship.

Vincent was still smiling. Charu could not see his eyes but knew he was looking at her.

‘The more I look at her, the more she resembles your daughter. Eh, Captain’ Vincent spoke. His voice all honey and poison.

Vincent walked around the Captain, his head cocked as a Vulture.

The Captain moved with him trying to shield Charu from his gaze. Charu just huddled behind the Captain. Her tears stained the Captain’s white uniform.

‘You know they will be coming after us’. The Captain said and added ‘Sooner or later’ has an afterthought.

Vincent laughed, ‘Sooner, Captain, sooner. People have been coming after me from my childhood. This may be a new experience for you but for me, it's just an occupational hazard'.

‘We are, after all, pirates.’ He laughed again.

Senthil’s cell beeped just as he was parking his scooter. He snuck out his cell one-handed while his other hand pulled back the heavy Chetak onto its stand.

It was the Major. Senthil hurried inside the house to find Sheryl huddled on the sofa. She was not crying anymore but her red eyes showed that she had cried for a long time.

Senthil saluted the Major.

Without any preamble, the Major said, ‘That is a topographical map of the stream you found’. A laptop screen showed a contoured map with the stream shining a vivid blue.

“What is your assessment’ he asked Senthil pointing towards the laptop.

Senthil moved ahead and worked the mouse, moving the map around. He minimized the map and moved westward until the upper part of the screen filled with a vivid green.

Satisfied Senthil had a nod.

‘They came out here,’ Senthil checked the map and continued, ‘near the stone quarry’.

‘Why, here?’ asked the lady in navy fatigues who was originally handling the laptop.

Senthil smiled and said, ‘Because there’s a dirt road from the quarry which leads to the docks’.

He looked at the Major. The Major gave a smile and said, ‘And guess which Ship is docked at the sea?’

‘Makranda’ Senthil said.

The Major looked around and said, “I told you, Senthil had the sharpest eyes and the sharpest brain’.

Sheryl's head snapped around on hearing the word Makranda.

‘My daughter is on that ship. Please save her Major. Senthil’ she growled in a wet voice.

‘Babi, Babi' Senthil hurried over and tried comforting her.

‘Ma’am, that ship is docked out 5 miles in the water. Near the international border and within a busy shipping lane. Surrounded by about 50 similar ships. Believe me, it won't be easy for the police or coast guard to do anything for your daughter. But those waters are Navy territory. They won't even know what hit them’. The Major voiced hungrily.

Just then a beep was heard and a soldier stepped forward.

‘Sir, the Shrunga is ready’.

‘Then what are we waiting for, Lets hunt’ the Major shouted.

There was a flurry of activity and the room was cleared out in 5 minutes.

Senthil waited until only Sheryl and the Major were left in the room.

‘Sir, can I join you.

‘I would not go on this mission without my best sniper’.

‘Sir, can Sheryl also come with us?’

‘That is...

Suddenly, a staccato of short taps was heard followed by a scream.

A soldier burst inside dragging his profusely bleeding leg. Another followed behind him.

‘Report’ the Major ordered.

The soldier started bandaging his injured partner and spoke ‘Sir, two masked persons drove into the driveway. On seeing us they turned around hastily. We tried to stop them but they fired at us. Srinivas was hit in the legs. It was an Uzi, Sir’.

‘Uzis are not easy to come by’ the Major mused.

‘Unless you are a smugler’ Senthil added.

‘Well, then it seems, Sherly would indeed be safer with us. You stay with Srinivas and get him patched up. Senthul, please bring along Sheryl. We have pirates to hunt’.

‘Stupid, son of bitches’ shouted Ruth and hurled his gin and tonic glass on the wall.

Charu shrieked at the sudden noise.

Vincent looked up calmly and asked, ‘What?’

‘Our men failed to pick up Sheryl. Two of the bastards went towards her house for a recon. Navy soldiers were present there. One of the bastards panicked and shot a soldier. Another of our men saw Sheryl leave with them’. Ruth replied back.

‘Well done' the Captain glared daggers at him.

Ruth glared back clenching his fists.

‘Great that means, the Navy is coming for us. Sheryl should be with them. We won't need to kidnap her at all.’ Vincent smiled again.

‘Charu beta, your mother is coming. Oh, what a happy family reunion we will have'.

‘I bet that old dog Senthil is with them. He killed a lot of my men.’ Ruth glowered happy to find another target for his anger.

‘Then set up a reception for them and I think it's time the Makranda  disappeared’. Vincent added.

Ruth smiled back and spoke into his walkie-talkie.

Someone clicked a button in the ship's control room and the whole section of the bow on which ‘Makranda’ was written, retracted back, and was replaced by ‘Sari-Laut’.

Sari-Laut, the pollen of the sea. An especially cruel joke which Vincent found hilarious and Captain despised with all of his being.

‘It's done’ Ruth answered.
