We Rise By Lifting Others

We Rise By Lifting Others

Our chairman addressed the entire college after we received the accreditation from the AICTE. As always he was blowing his own trumpet for the achievement and mentioned the names of a few HODs. All the teachers and support staff were really upset at his ingratitude. All of us had put our best foot forward and burnt the midnight oil and he was bragging as if he did it all alone. In most workplaces this is a common practice. The ones at the helm of an organisation rule the roost. Delegation of tasks is what they do and getting work done by others is their cup of tea. No doubt, the major responsibility like decision making, execution of the plan, final consent, and other aspects of accountability lies on their shoulders, but that doesn't mean they grab the contribution of others too. Does a candle lose its light by lighting another? There are people who share success and give credit to others but these are far and few.

When an operation is successful we profusely thank the Doctor who performed the surgery, elevating him to the position of the Creator. All credit to him undoubtedly for his brains and efforts but, is he solely responsible ? What about the assisting doctors, the nurses, and the other staff ? Isn't it a teamwork ? This holds good for a majority of aspects in our life. We often forget the creators behind the screen and place the entire credit on the final runner of the race. As a result, this demotivates the contributors at the grassroot level. They accept their plight as unsung heroes.

We often hear students say, "I had a brilliant maths teacher in my VIII th Std. She brushed me for three years and I secured excellent marks in maths in my Board Exams. I was taught by an amazing English teacher in college, who carved my communication skills. Do we even think of our kindergarten teachers who had a tough time putting up with our childhood tantrums, who came down to our level, understood our moods, behaved accordingly and taught us the alphabet ? Our entire education stands on the foundation laid by them. Do we ever remember them?

We talk about we being different components of one society, that we depend on each other and we need to walk hand-in-hand. Strangely, we follow this as per our whims and fancies. We often put the "I" first when it comes to an achievement or where there is an award announced. If we have done something we prefer to take the entire credit and often dislike sharing success with others. If a movie is a blockbuster not only the producers, the director and the actors there are multitudes of members who deserve acclaim. Similarly, a town, a state, a nation, any organisation wherever there are many members involved the hard work of all must be taken into account and appreciated.

The deepest craving of human nature is the need to be appreciated. We often picturise ourselves as good people who are compassionate, empathetic and hardworking. We even make sacrifices at times. But when appreciating another we take a back step. Let us recognise the contribution of others too and let us not hesitate to uplift another because by doing so we are elevating ourselves. Let us be encouragers, the world has plenty of critics.

IF YOU SEE SOMEONE FALLING BEHIND WALK BESIDE THEM

IF YOU SEE SOMEONE BEING IGNORED FIND A WAY TO INCLUDE THEM

ALWAYS REMIND PEOPLE OF THEIR WORTH

ONE SMALL ACT COULD MEAN THE WORLD TO THEM
