She was 21 when they met, a chilly December evening. Everything around her stopped momentarily. She could hear her heart pounding and screaming from the inside, “Yes! This is it, the moment you’ve always dreamt of.” The glint in his eyes struck a fire in her. Life was at its beautiful best. All of a sudden, the morning sun looked more refreshing than ever. The midnight moon peeping through the window had never been so mellow. The evening breeze had never been more comforting. She was in love, or so she thought.

And then one day, the truth dawned upon her. The feeling of having woken up from the most wonderful dream, with the realization that it was never meant to be reality. It was all so unexpected. Everything looked pale and somber. He was gone, and so was the sparkle in her eyes. She was devastated. Gazing at the night sky that once looked so delightful, she tried to figure out what went wrong. In the end, she had no answer. What she knew for sure was that the fire hadn’t died out. But isn’t love more than just sparks and fire?

Amidst all the pondering, she dozed off and drifted into a dream, where she found herself next to a dying bonfire. She did everything possible on her part to keep the fire burning, but she knew it wasn’t long before the cold winds would put out the fire. She felt a blanket being draped around her shoulders, a palm caressing her gently. Hoping against hope, she turned around to see if he was back.

She's 79 now, and it was winter, again. She woke up to a peck on her lips, smiling. She had fallen asleep next to the fireplace yet again, on her rocking chair. As always, she found herself wrapped comfortably in a blanket. “Happy Anniversary, love! Congratulations to fifty years of togetherness”, he said. She shook off the memories of her past and kissed him with all the warmth.
