Chapter 1: The Pact at Arippa

Everyone was genuinely happy when the journey started. Our semester exams had just wrapped up, and we were finally vibing around, leaving all the stress behind. Law school is brutal—getting a break after months of endless lecture hours, case studies, and sleepless nights feels like taking a smooth road straight from hell to heaven.
In the car, the five of us—me, Tanvi, Karthik, Abhinand, and Rahul—were laughing, playing music, and just enjoying the ride. We were close friends, practically inseparable. We had all crumbled under the heavy pressure during exam week, but now, every ounce of that tension seemed to evaporate as we left the city limits of Thiruvananthapuram behind.
We were heading to a private bungalow owned by Karthik’s uncle, tucked deep inside the Arippa forest range.
The road flattened out as thick, towering trees slowly swallowed the night sky. By 7:00 PM, we passed the signboards marking the forest entry. The surroundings were quiet—unnervingly quiet. We knew we were late, but nobody cared. Most of the guys had slept through the drive so we could stay up late and vibe once we reached the bungalow.
By the time we pulled into the isolated compound, it was already 9:00 PM. Since none of us were sleepy after resting on the way, we hung out in the main hall. After a few rounds of UNO, we decided to play Truth or Dare.
Abhinand placed a heavy glass bottle in the center of the wooden table and spun it. First it pointed at Karthik, then me, then Rahul. We were all laughing, giving each other lighthearted dares, until the bottle slowed down and pointed its sharp tip straight at Tanvi.
"Truth," Tanvi said, tossing her hair back with a small laugh.
Abhinand leaned forward across the table, a smirk playing on his lips as he looked at Tanvi.
"Alright, Tanvi. Truth," Abhinand said, tilting his head. "Since you loved your dad so much... tell us, what actually happened that night? Did he really get beaten up by strangers, or did he just get into a trashy street fight he couldn't win?"
The casual chatter in the room died instantly.
Tanvi’s smile vanished. Her face flushed red with instant rage, her eyes swelling with tears.
"What did you just say?" Tanvi snapped, her voice trembling as she stood up, knocking her chair back. "Take that back right now, Abhinand!"
"Oh, come on, don't get so sensitive," Abhinand laughed carelessly, waving his hand. "We're just playing the game."
"Take it back!" she screamed, lunging across the small table and shoving him hard in the chest.
What started as a stupid remark quickly turned into a violent shouting match. Tanvi pushed him in pure grief and anger, and Abhinand shoved her back, completely losing his temper as they argued.
In a split second of sudden, unthinking rage, Abhinand snatched up the glass bottle they had been spinning on the table and swung it.
The bottle struck Tanvi’s head with a sickening thud.
She collapsed instantly onto the floor. Blood began spreading rapidly across the rug beneath her—thick, dark, and endless.
"Tanvi!" I screamed, dropping to my knees beside her.
We were all yelling at Abhinand, our voices shrill with sheer panic. Karthik rushed forward and desperately pressed two fingers against her neck. Seconds dragged into a horrifying silence. When he pulled his hand back, his face was completely drained of color.
"She's gone. Tanvi is gone," Karthik choked out.
I couldn't breathe. My lungs locked up, and I backed against the wall, crying hysterically, unable to process what had just happened. My best friend was lying lifeless on the floor. Karthik and Rahul tried to console me, but their hands were shaking just as violently.
When Abhinand finally came to his senses and realized what he had done, he collapsed to his knees, staring at his hands in horror. He realized he had committed a crime from which there was no turning back.
"Janvi, please! Listen to me!" Rahul pleaded, stepping in front of me with wide, terrified eyes. "We're law students—you know what Section 302 means! They will put us all in jail! No one will believe this was an accident!"
"She was my best friend!" I sobbed, choking on my own tears. "We can't just leave her!"
"Janvi, please!" Rahul begged, his voice cracking. "If we go to the police, all five of our lives and futures are destroyed forever!"
After endless, frantic minutes of shouting, sobbing, and panic, fear completely took over. I broke down and agreed.
Under the suffocating canopy of the Arippa forest, far from any living soul, we dragged Tanvi’s body into the pitch-black woods. Digging into the cold, wet soil with bare hands and rusted tools, we buried my best friend, her blood, and our futures together beneath the roots.
As we scrambled back into the car and drove away into the night, my gaze drifted to the rear-view mirror. Through the distorted glass, standing motionless at the edge of the dark treeline, was a figure wearing Tanvi’s clothes, staring directly back at me with unblinking eyes. The others kept staring straight ahead, completely blind to what I saw, as the forest swallowed her grave and locked us forever into an unwanted silence.
