Growing up, we heard many stories from our parents and grandparents, but this one is special.
It isn’t just a story; it is a legend of my hometown.
It happened back when the day ended at 7 PM. My grandfather was still in school then. As the sun set, our bustling town would turn quiet. Without electricity, the only light came from little oil lamps, known in Odia as
Dibiri.
One night, my grandfather finished his homework and went to sleep as usual. But when he woke the next morning, chaos had broken out.
My family, who were once the Zamindars (landlords), still held a strong reputation, so news, good or bad, always reached us first.
The news that morning was terrifying: the town was infected with Cholera.
In those days, with limited medical facilities and no real cure, the disease was a death sentence. Days passed, and the death toll rose.
Every neighborhood was filled with the sounds of wailing and pleading. My great-grandfather visited the only hospital, but the situation was hopeless. You know how it is-when nothing works, when you have no solution and feel completely helpless, you turn to God.
Our family’s Kuldevta (ancestral deity) is Madanmohan, a form of Lord Narayan. It wasn’t just our family; the whole town had immense faith in Him. So, the community decided to plead to the ultimate protector. A grand pooja was conducted, and everyone poured their hearts out to the beautiful form of Shri Krishna, our adorable Madan Mohan.
Miracles do happen. The very next night, people heard a strange noise outside: the distinct sound of a horse galloping through the empty streets. A few brave souls took their
Dibiris and stepped out into the dark. They caught sight of a figure riding a horse, wearing a turban, galloping swiftly through the town. Many others reported hearing the same thundering hooves.
The next day, the town was cured.
Since then, legend has it that whenever Cholera struck and people began to die, that same sound would eventually be heard in the night, and by morning, the town would be healed.
If you believe, it is a spiritual miracle. If you don’t, it is just another story.
