Death of a Monster

“Bah! Leaving me here all rotten and old without any heir. How is anybody going to take pity on me anyways?!” This was the dreaded cyclops, Polyphemus. Cyclops are giant creatures with only one eye and are usually very big, frightening and strong. This specific cyclops was the biggest, most feared and most, well I must not say this, but, most blind. It… is a long story. If you are willing to hear it, then I will tell you all the stories that changed his life forever. Polyphemus was not always blind. He was the child of Poseidon and a powerful one, at that, just like his father. He used to bully other cyclops and in the evenings used to take his beloved sheep for a stroll. One day, a hero landed on his island and asked for shelter for a few days. Polyphemus was first a bit suspicious, but in the end granted the hero shelter. This hero was our favourite one, Odysseus. In return for shelter, Polyphemus asked for anything only meant for him. Odysseus gave him the barrels of wine which they had with them. In the meantime, Polyphemus went for a stroll and blocked the entrance to the cave with a giant rock. Odysseus and his men were worried. Polyphemus had already consumed two of their men. Then Odysseus got an idea. He took an iron rod and burnt it when Polyphemus was sleeping. He poked it hard in Polyphemus’s eye.

The Cyclops howled in pain and Poseidon heard him. Polyphemus told Poseidon everything that Odysseus had done to him. Odysseus, in the meantime, was escaping from the island on his ship. This was a very nice thing for Poseidon as he is the god of the sea. He cursed Odysseus and made mortal enemies with him, But Odysseus survived his curse miraculously. By then Polyphemus was getting older and older. Then one day, the Fates cut the string of Polyphemus. When the Fates cut the string of someone, That someone dies. So did Polyphemus. The Fates were, thankfully, not cursed by Poseidon. Polyphemus went to the Underworld and.. Not technically lived happily ever after, but for a monster like him, it was a happily ever after.
