Talaash
There was a girl who was successful and had everything in life.
She had a successful job and was supposed to go to Singapore to handle the new branch her company was opening there. Thanks to her, the company was growing; it was almost as if the girl had a Midas touch.
Her life had everything she had ever dreamed of. The icing on the cake was her personal life, which had brought her a lifelong companion who loved her more than anything. Her childhood friend, Rishabh, had proposed to her, and they had instantly taken their friendship to the next level. Her parents were on cloud nine. At last, their beautiful daughter had not only excelled in her professional life but was also soon supposed to tie the knot with the love of her life.
And just when everything was falling into place, life decided to shake things up and make her experience the saying, “You make plans, and life laughs at you.”
She was someone who created her own destiny and preferred to stay in control rather than letting life take control.
But that day, everything changed. As she was returning from another big, successful meeting and was excited to plan her travel for the following week, she got into a major car accident.
The accident was so severe that she was in a coma for a few months. When she opened her eyes, she couldn’t remember who she was.
Though she was still breathing, life had taken away her memories and her identity. The biggest question in her life was, “Who is she?”
Her family and Rishabh were devastated, but she was the one bearing the burden of her erased memories. The doctors had not given up, but they advised everyone not to put too much pressure on her to recall her memories, as doing so might put her at risk.
Everyone tried their best to put on a brave face, but she knew this was going to be a roller-coaster ride. Where was she supposed to go from here? They reminded her of the person they knew her to be, but she no longer knew herself.
And then one day, she left a small note: “Hi, I am leaving. Please don’t look for me.” She had no idea why she had booked a flight to Mussoorie.
She came across an interesting café in Mussoorie called “Talaash Café” and, without realising it, booked a seven-day stay there. Planning becomes easier when you are not fully aware of your choices and simply go with the flow.
When she reached Talaash Café, it looked as if it had been waiting for her. She checked herself in and completed the formalities. The best part was that the owner didn’t try to probe the reason for her visit, because she herself had no answer. They respected each other’s silence. He didn’t ask many questions, and she was afraid of the answers she was still searching for.
Just as she was about to retire to her room, she met a boy who seemed to be around her age. Their eyes met. He tried to smile at her, but she simply looked at him and left without acknowledging his smile.
The café offered a few activities, but she kept to herself. She spent most of her time staring at the mountain visible from her room’s window. The café didn’t look particularly luxurious, but she felt something she hadn’t felt since her accident. The only challenge was that she was still trying to put a name to this feeling. The café almost spoke for itself. Though the weather was pleasant and she occasionally stepped out of her room, she noticed couples having meals together, dancing, and losing themselves in each other’s company. None of it affected her. She was so preoccupied with her loneliness that the noise around her didn’t disturb her.
However, one thing caught her attention: the boy she had met at the reservation counter. Every morning, when she saw him, he tried to smile at her, but she never smiled back. She started seeing him more often around the café. It was only later that she heard someone say that Palash was the café owner’s son and was trying his best to keep the café open. His father was in a state not very different from hers, but she didn’t know what was happening with him.
She always kept to herself. Every day, she went out in search of herself, but, alas, when she returned, she was still the same person. She often took her meals in her room; only at dinner did she come out to the common room. She started recognising the regular customers as well as the new ones.
Once, as she went to hand over her room key for cleaning, she heard the staff talking. “If Palash doesn’t do something soon, the café will close.” Once upon a time, it had been a successful café, but after the sudden changes in the owner’s life, everything had changed. Though it wasn’t her home, she suddenly felt a lump in her throat, as if life were once again ready to take away something that had begun to feel like home.
And then, for the first time, during dinner, she sat in front of Palash and said, “Hi.”
She said, “Look, I know it’s none of my business, but I overheard that the café might close. How can I help you?” Palash looked at her. There was no sympathy in her eyes, only concern for his place. He smiled and said, “Thank you for your concern. I really appreciate it, but I have this under control.” She was about to turn away when she noticed the papers laid out on the table: strategies, plans, a few management books, articles, and so on. Much to her own surprise, she pulled up a chair in front of him and started looking through the papers.
Palash was surprised. Instead of telling her not to bother and to leave it alone, he somehow found himself saying nothing. He simply went with the flow.
She went through all the papers and plans, picked up a sheet of paper, and started scribbling. It felt as if life were testing her, and she was ready with the answers. For two straight hours, she kept writing, referring to books and checking a few things on her phone. At the end, she handed him the strategy and plan to save Talaash.
Palash was stunned by the strategy and the changes she had suggested. Little did he realise that he was dealing with a business consultant who was extraordinary in her field. She said, “If we implement this, we can turn things around.” He smiled and said, “Thank you so much. You don’t know what—” Before he could complete the sentence, she left. But this time, a smile found its way onto her face.
The next morning felt different to her. Though she had stayed awake late into the night, she felt fresh and rejuvenated.
This time, when she saw Palash at the reception counter, she wished him good morning. The spark in his eyes showed that something had changed for him the previous night. She was about to leave when he stopped her and said, “If you don’t mind, can we sit together and go through the strategy and plan, and discuss the changes you suggested?” Before he could complete his sentence, she handed him a few papers. She had stayed awake all night preparing a detailed plan for the changes to be made.
Palash looked at the papers in shock. Every fine detail was in place, from changes to the ambience, food, activities, cushions, seating arrangements, flowers, lights, music, and meals. Every detail was spelled out on the paper. How could she have prepared this so effortlessly in just a few hours? How could someone who had stayed there for only a few days sacrifice a night’s sleep just to save the place? She was the biggest blessing in disguise. When his father joined him, Palash narrated everything, and, much to his surprise, he saw a smile on his father’s face for the first time in a long while.
She really was a miracle for the place. The three of them sat together and had a lengthy discussion about the changes. She took the lead and explained every fine detail. That turned out to be the turning point for Talaash. Through these discussions and meetings, the three of them started spending a lot of time together. Palash could see the impact this girl was having on his father. His father was slowly becoming himself again. He started caring about the customers and rediscovered his love for the café.
Things changed in both Palash’s life and the girl’s life. They started enjoying spending time together. However, Palash never asked her about her past or why she had come to the café.
Their efforts really paid off. Not only did the café become successful, but its entire atmosphere changed. Even Palash’s father began to think the girl had some magic. She had truly saved the most important thing in his life. He also noticed that the two of them had started enjoying each other’s company. life had truly changed for the better.
So this is how happiness feels, the girl thought. She had breathed new life into the café, and somewhere along the way, the café had done the same for her. However, there were still answers she was looking for. Palash was a nice boy. He really cared for her and looked at her in a way that made her heart skip a beat. But she was seeking answers; she just wasn’t sure whom to ask.
One fine afternoon, the café was closed for cleaning. She was sitting at a table, going through the bills, when she saw a woman standing in front of her. “Excuse me, I’ve come from very far away. Could I please get a cup of coffee? It’s raining heavily, and there’s nowhere else open.”
She looked at the woman and, for a second, felt she had seen her somewhere before. Anyway, she smiled and said, “Sure, no problem. But the gate was closed. How did you get in?” The woman looked at her and said, “I guess you left it open by mistake.”
Confused, she said, “No worries. Anyway, have a seat. I’ll get you a hot cup of coffee.”
The lady replied, “I like my coffee with two spoons of milk and one spoon of sugar.” She took the order and went to prepare the coffee. When she returned, the lady was sitting at the same table, going through the bills.
She smiled, handed over the coffee, and said, “Sorry, I’ll take it from here.” The lady said, “If it’s all right, could you join me for coffee? You seem pretty engrossed in your work. It’s raining outside, and I’d love to chat with you.”
Something encouraged her to join the lady for coffee. Though the café was closed, she agreed to sit with her. The lady looked at her as if she were trying to read her. Then the lady asked, “Do you belong here?” The girl was silent, as if the question had another layer to it. She hesitated, then said, “I’m discovering that. But yes, this place speaks to me, as if it’s trying to communicate something to me.” The lady listened and replied, “You need to listen more carefully, because you may find the answers you’re looking for.” For a moment, the girl’s expression changed, because this was exactly what had been on her mind. Who was she? What was her real identity? Where was her journey leading?
The lady smiled and said, “Don’t focus too much on the destination, beta. Sometimes, you just need to enjoy the journey itself. It’s strange, dear, how we keep looking for answers outside when the answers lie within us.”
The girl smiled and said, “What if life takes everything away from us? How do we still have anything to offer anyone?” The lady smiled and said, “When you find your purpose in life, happiness will find you, no matter what you do. You may or may not believe in destiny, but your path takes you where you truly belong, even when it seems to be the wrong path.”
Though their conversation was short, the lady looked at her and said, “Keep doing what you’re doing, and life will surprise you. I see a spark in you; you just need to keep giving it air.” The lady finished her coffee. Before leaving, she turned back and said, “Believe in your journey; it will lead you down the right path. The coffee was really good. There is magic in your hands, and I love what you’ve done with the café.”
She thanked the lady and said, “Thank you for joining me for coffee. I had a nice time with you, too. Keep visiting us, and don’t forget to give us your reviews and feedback. We have a bunch of activities planned for the weekend, so come and enjoy them.”
The lady smiled and said, “Don’t worry, I’ll visit soon.” She watched her leave through the door. She returned to her bills but kept thinking about her conversation with the lady. Surprisingly, she felt lighter and clearer in her thoughts, as if she had found her calling.
Palash and his father had gone out of Mussoorie to meet a vendor, so she was taking care of the café alone. She soon forgot about the lady, but that night she opened her laptop and started writing a blog.
Slowly, she began writing inspirational blogs and articles. Not only was she taking care of and supporting the café, but she was also finding herself through writing. Whatever her heart had held back, the words eventually found their way out. Slowly, her writing began to attract people’s attention.
Palash was happy to see her in a good mood. He had been in love with her from the very first day he saw her, and now the feeling was mutual. She also loved Palash and the way her life was unfolding. It felt like a complete circle. The owner, Sharma ji, had also changed.
Just when things were finally falling into place, an incident occurred. One afternoon, as she hurried downstairs, she slipped and fell. It was a horrible sight. There was blood, and Palash and his father quickly took her to the hospital, where she had to undergo surgery. For the first time, Palash realised he knew nothing about this girl, except that he loved her more than anything else.
He was sitting right beside her when she opened her eyes. Though there were no words, the look in his eyes told her that something was different. As he sat beside her, flashes of the past began coming back to her: her job, Singapore, her family, and, above all, Rishabh. Her head was spinning, as if her memories were trying desperately to emerge and remind her who she was. While she struggled with all this, Palash sat holding her hand. His eyes showed that he was scared to death of losing her. She looked at him, smiled, and said, “Hi.” At that very moment, Palash felt his breath return. She squeezed his hand and said, “Palash, I want to tell you something about myself.” Palash listened as she told him who she was and about her journey so far. One thought haunted him: What if she left him to restart the life she had left behind before meeting him? Could he simply let the love of his life go? But he truly loved her and decided to support her decision, whatever it might be.
She was excited that her memories had come back and that she knew who she was. At the same time, reality hit her. Did this mean she now had to choose between the two journeys?
She called her parents and Rishabh. They couldn’t believe that her memories were back, and she told them everything. A part of her was excited to meet them, but that also meant leaving behind something she had discovered here.
Palash simply watched her. It was difficult to accept what was happening, but love doesn’t come easily; it comes with baggage.
His thoughts were interrupted when a nurse asked him to come and settle the bills. He took out his wallet to check whether he had his credit card, and at that moment, a picture fell from his wallet. He didn’t notice it and left in a hurry to pay the bills.
She was lost in her thoughts when another nurse came to check on her and noticed the picture lying on the floor. She picked it up and said, “Ma’am, I guess this is yours.” As the nurse handed her the picture, her face turned pale. The woman in the picture with Palash and his father was the same woman who had visited her a few days earlier.
At the same time, Palash returned and saw her holding the picture. She asked, “Palash, this fell from your wallet. Who is this woman in the picture?” Palash smiled and said, “She is the most beautiful and wonderful woman on earth. She is my mom.”
She looked at him, trying to comprehend and connect the dots. She asked him, “Where is she now? Why doesn’t she stay with you?” There was sadness in his eyes when he answered, “We lost her five years ago in a car accident.”
Before she could process what he had told her, their conversation was interrupted by visitors who had come to see her. Soon, the room filled with people showing her how much she was loved, yet she was still trying to understand what had happened a few days earlier. Palash became busy attending to them, while her face grew pale. Palash noticed and asked her what had happened. She opened her mouth, but the words wouldn’t come. She simply said, “Nothing. I’m just feeling tired. I want to go back to Talaash soon.”
She was now resting in her room, no longer thinking about her old memories, but about her meeting with Palash’s mother. Life is easy when you don’t have many choices, but she was blessed that life had given her options. The choices seemed simple: to return to where she had started, to go back to her old life, which offered stability, love, and success, or to remain where she was.
But how do we prepare to embark on a journey when we don’t know the path and the goal seems distant?
She closed her eyes and recalled her conversation with Palash’s mother again and again. It’s tough fighting with your thoughts when they are tearing you apart as you try to choose a side.
Someone knocked at her door. She got up to open it, and it felt as if her old life had come to visit her. Her family and Rishabh were all standing there, with high hopes and happiness on their faces, overjoyed that their girl was back.
They were so excited to have her back that they immediately began sharing their plans for her return. Even her old boss was there, ready to take her back, and Rishabh was already talking about getting married. But no one paused to ask how she was or what she was doing here. The only concern she saw was in her mother’s eyes, which said a lot without words.
She listened to them carefully, but somewhere in the midst of everything, she heard the voice of the life she no longer wanted. She looked at her mother, and in that moment, her mother knew her daughter had made her choice.
Sometimes we need to choose ourselves because it’s worth it. You can’t keep playing someone else’s role in life; it would break you. Hence, it’s imperative to be true to yourself.
life always gives you ways to discover yourself, and once you do, it becomes a beautiful voyage.
She was standing in the auditorium, addressing the audience. Though there were many people in the auditorium, silence had taken over the entire hall.
As Tara ended her story, someone in the audience asked:
“What happened to that girl? Did she go back?”
Tara smiled and said:
“No. She is standing right in front of you.”
As usual, it had been a successful session. When she came out of the hall, Palash was waiting for her with a bouquet in his hand to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary and Talaash’s success party.
