Deepa, the Mausi was enthralled when she came to know the good news and was eagerly awaiting the little one’s arrival. The celebration was at its peak, Sheela, her elder sister, had just delivered her second child.

The doctor came out carrying the bundle of joy in her hand and handed it over to Deepa. Her joy knew no bounds when she was given the angel, she caressed her gently with tears trickling down her cheeks.

Immediately out of nowhere, Sheela’s mother in law came in and rebuked,” Who asked the doctor to hand over our granddaughter to this barren piece of land.

As per our tradition, a girl child should be first held by an elderly lady who has delivered at least 2 kids”.Deepa felt totally rejected upon hearing her remark.

Very little did Sheela’s MIL knew the pain and tribulations that Deepa had undergone trying to conceive a child.

Deepa was a chirpy, vibrant girl in her early thirties who married the love of her life, Karthik. They were married for over ten years, yet they weren’t blessed with the joy of having a child.

As in every household, it’s always the lady who has to bear the brunt. She had tried numerous medical options such as zillion ultrasound scans, laparoscopic procedures, hormone injections which involved multiple visits to the doctor’s clinic and even some nontraditional approaches, including acupuncture, herbal supplements, and yoga practice.

None of them helped. All she experienced was immense pain and severe mood swings due to these drawn-out procedures. Finally, they ascertained that Karthik had issues with the sperm count due to which she couldn’t conceive naturally. Frustrated and exhausted by expensive, excruciating procedures that never worked, the couple had finally given up.

The yardstick of judging a married woman has been her ability to bear an heir for the family. Not being able to bear a child has always been considered a sin by the society. Never was it considered that the man also could be responsible for the same. It is time we step up against this injustice meted out to the women and understand that the issue could be either with the woman or man.
