Social Media - A Curse To Humanity?

Social Media - A Curse To Humanity?

In this day and age people's attention span is gradually decreasing on a daily basis.

Yeah! We're humans and not bots or AI so we are ought to have limited attention span but because of the new technological advancement and updates in the existing apps like IG, SC, X, YT, FB, etc. has introduced shorts, reels, etc. that are affecting our brains adversely and the worst part is that we aren't aware of it yet.

Although it's not anyone's fault!

It's actually the information boom that's happening these days at a rapid pace that we can't even control ourselves and we end up getting invested in someone else's life on social media whom we don't even know in person.

Not only that the algorithms are sorting out things for you so that it can grab your attention for a few seconds and let you in it's loop.

And guess what? Now you're becoming addicted by watching those few seconds clip which later builds up to a longer period of time and bam your half day is gone just by scrolling through Social media.

But that's what we people like - SIMPLE THINGS in life!

Remember when we were kids and had to mug up the whole syllabus for our exams, so we trick our brains to study the easiest chapter first then the second easiest one until you finish your entire syllabus by getting your brain intrigued throughout the learning process?

That's how these algorithms have tricked our brains to get us intrigued by their 10 to 20 seconds of clips so that when we get bored instead of watching a series of 10+ hours we just grab our phones and start scrolling through these reels and shorts which has unique interesting information, gossips, memes, etc in a one go!

And before you knew it you're slowly but steadily becoming a technological servant.

Yeah, You heard me right!

You're becoming a technological servant!

Payal, what do you mean by that? Are you so saintly that you have never been controlled by technology?

Well! I'm not denying that at all.

There were times when I've been glued to my phone and using it non-stop for days but after wasting few days and got nothing out of it!

I realized this was of no use at all and since then I've adopted healthy habits and started to practice self-control.

So back to the main point like how these algorithms are making you a technological servant.

Basically, all these zeroes and ones are designed nowadays to catch your attention in a fraction of seconds and make you waste your precious time into looking up someone's so called ✨AMAZING LIFE✨ on social media.

But we already know that whatever these social media influencers show on social media is not all true.

Most of the people these days are going through depression but still they'll post on social media like "Hey y'all! I'm having an Amazing time doing this or that."

I don't include everyone in this category but honestly most of the social media influencers have become like this these days.

And what some people do is just utterly insane. They started to compare themselves to these people.

(This for the people who compare themselves to other people's life based on few posts on their social media : They're having fun? Good for them! Also you don't really know them personally and even if you do then it's none of your business. Okay that went rude let me put it this way maybe they have really worked hard to achieve that luxurious lifestyle so instead of getting all jealous you should get motivated and work hard to achieve that lifestyle too)

We've actually forgotten why social media came into existence in the first place.

It was meant to get us connected faster than ever before but idk what happened but it's separating us even further away.

Sometimes I think it was much better before when people used to send each other letters via postal services, talked to each other on telephones, waited all day long to watch their favourite show on T.V. that used to air at 8 PM.

But because of this technological advancement we've everything on our fingertips (Ps : Yeah! That's also a good thing that we've achieved such a great deal of technological advancement in a few decades but because of all this we're becoming less human day by day)

We're forgetting to cherish little things in life and instead of that we're judging or nagging about everything.

Okay! These last few paragraphs went completely out of context but who cares? It's my blog I can literally write anything I want lol

Jokes aside let's get to the main point!

So basically because of this tidal surge of information from all around us we can only focus on the biggest and most eye-catching news at one time and guess what?

If I'll ask you about that particular information after a few months. You won't remember anything about it!

That's what social media is doing to your brain it's limiting your attention span to mere 10 seconds all thanks to it's new updates (Pun intended!)

So what do you think is social media a curse to humanity or is it a blessing in disguise for a tech-savvy?

Let me know your thoughts in the comment section!
