Dear Diary,

Today the day started really well as the weather was pleasant and a cool breeze was blowing. In the evening, my family members decided to go on a drive for some change. We have not been out for very long due to the lockdown. Soothing music and humorous chats inside the car was making it a perfect Sunday. The mood got distressed suddenly when we saw a person nearly coming under an autorickshaw. For a few seconds, we could not understand anything and just screamed inside the car, as if it could save that person somehow. The driver pulled the brake at the absolute right time and still the auto-rickshaw’s front tyre was just an inch away from the man’s abdomen. A minute’s delay would have throttled the man.

To me, the scene appeared as if the man was sitting near the driver's seat and he immediately fell down due to some illness but my husband said that the man was already walking on the road and he was heavily drunk. The drunk man lost control and fell exactly in front of the auto-rickshaw. The driver was kind enough, so he got down and lifted him to the road-side, to make him safe from other vehicles.

I was feeling very sympathetic for the drunk man initially but when I got to know the truth, my feelings changed suddenly. How can people be so irresponsible towards their lives and their family members? Can life be put at risk so easily, just for alcohol?

The music in the car was no longer soothing and everyone got quiet for a few minutes, like they had gone into some introspection. Although, this is a common scenario seen with drunk people, yet it triggered a myriad of thoughts in the mind. I wish that people understand the importance of their lives and they think of their family members before indulging into something that can have such dire consequences.
