Mother

"Pass me the goddamn ball Henry!" Immediately my palm went straight to my mouth. "I hope no one noticed me saying this." I nervously looked around to find Miss Mary staring me straight in the eye from her office. She beckoned me to come near her. My heart skipped a beat. Holding my arm, she asked, "How are you Olivia? Are you enjoying yourself here? Hey, how did you get this bruise on your elbow ?" In no time I realised she had no idea of what I said. With the newfound courage, I replied shaking myself off her hold, "I'm not a kid ma'am, I'm 10 years old, it's nothing, I know how to take care of myself." Miss Mary took a deep sigh and replied, "I've some good news for you, now you may have a mother to take care of that wound. Yes Olivia, a lady has decided to adopt you. Now you may have a home. But I've to inspect her first to check whether she is suitable or not." 

The journey from my little smile to pearly white grin was even faster than Uncle John's red car. I just couldn't stop giggling and imagining my new life. I have waited for this moment for so long. I wish I could just dance all day. A mom like everyone in the school. A mom to braid my hair. I couldn't believe this wasn't a dream. 

But I knew Miss Mary won't let it happen. She had always found a way or another to reject my new parents. Several times had she told me that they were not fit for me. That woman had her eyes on me. I had to do something. I need to have a mother. 

Finally, my angel came to see me. She was young, the sweet fragrance from her body made me sniff her up like a dog. Her cheeks were so cuddly and her makeup! I could imagine myself using it and pouting in front of the mirror with the bright red lipstick. Now we'll see if Lily is prettier or me. Finally I have someone who'll love me. Miss Mary brought me to the side and whispered, "I couldn't find anything suspicious about her baby, but my gut says there's something wrong. Olivia just deny going with her, by law she won't be able to take you. We'll always be together. You and me in this lovely orphanage forever. You know I care for you." Her sparkling smile made me shiver. It felt like she'll grab me by my neck and cage me here forever. I ran to the lady and clung to her dress as tightly as possible. I asked her," Mommy, please take me home." She picked me in her lap lovingly and took me to her magnificent car.I was strapped and seated and Wooosh, the car flew to my new abode. Miss Mary couldn't move her eyes off me and my lovely car. "Goodbye Miss Mary, now you can't trouble me again." 

Soon Mommy turned really silent. Her smile disappeared out of her face. She was driving too fast. My heart raced too. Was something wrong? Finally I think we arrived at the home. "Is it home?" I asked mommy. It looked like a hospital. She replied, "Darling, I work here. I've some important work to do, why don't you come and sit with me for some time? " I gladly agreed, what could be better than going to office with Mommy. I went inside the building, Mom looked tensed. I kissed her hand, she smiled. Mommy now we both will never be sad. I'll fix all your problems. But her eyes were filled with tears. I couldn't understand. She asked me to sit in the white room, while she brings another chair. It had a huge mirror on one side. I looked at myself and shook my head hard so that my hair flew like ribbons in wind. But immediately Mommy locked the room from outside. 

I ran to the door, banging it with my little fists. "Mommy, I'm scared Mommy, please get me out of here. You're so sweet Mommy, please don't leave me all alone again. The kids at the orphanage always pranked me and locked me in the bathroom. Mommy I know you won't do that." She shouted back, tears strolling down her cheeks incessantly, "I'm not your fucking Mommy, shut your goddamn mouth for a minute, don't make this any harder for me, witch." My palm involuntarily went back to my mouth again. What was she talking about? How could she use such bad words?
