Make & Mend

I and my friend Sudha joined the navy in the month of August 1995. During recruitment, we stayed in Old Navy Nagar Colaba Mumbai. We studied together. Our study place was a building that was under construction. When we get tired due to extra work in English and Maths. We used that place to sleep.

After six months of preparation, the exam was conducted in the sailor's institute. I was feared about the result. 

I asked Sudha " Sudha, how was your exam?"

Sudha:- I am not 100% sure but I have done 60% correct. So I can say hopefully that I shall be selected.

Me:- That means you will go alone to CHILKA for naval training.

Sudha:- What are you saying, dear?

We both will go for training.

Me;- I hope, "your sweet words come true."

After a week result came out. A list of selected recruits was placed on the notice board. I saw that.

I started crying and saying loudly

Oh my God, "I can't believe it!"

I think I am so an intelligent boy.

Same time Sudha reached there.

He holds me in his arms and said. Now we are naval personals.

The next day early in the morning we started our journey by train from Mumbai CST to CHILKA.

20 hrs later. we reached CHILKA Base. An Instructor already was there at the main gate of the training base to received our batch. After reporting our luggage was deposited to the storeroom. After doing all formalities We all mustered at the parade ground.

The chief instructor made an announcement.

Pay attention you all welcome here at CHILKA Base. Now you all are under trainees. You are now required to maintain DISCIPLINE during training.

There is no rest. Forget this word.

There is no leave. No holidays.

After completion of 2 months of training, there will be made and mend on Wednesday and Saturday.

We questioned:- What is make and mend.

The instructor briefed us. Make and mend means that you guys can stitch your dress and tightening buttons etc.

You can write letters to your family and relatives.

That is all. 

We got much happiness.
