Dana says okay Resilient R-E-S-I-L-E Natalie says wrong and all students laugh Mr Willis says AW you mixed up yours I and E again I'm sorry Natalie says you know what? Your new name should be Dyslexia Danna Mr Willis says hey Natalie cut that out, okay? It's not nice to make fun of people's learning disabilities Dana you're okay you did great {school bell rings}, okay everybody doesn't forget the Hawkins spelling bee is in two weeks and the winner receives OOH the beehive spelling bee trophy so if you want to enter come on up and get a flyer teacher gives flyer to all Dana aren't you gonna enter the spelling bee? Dana says no, Mr Willis

Does Mr Willis say why not you don't want to?

Dana says competing in the spelling bee sounds in a dream I mix up my letters a lot, and I'm not very smart. Mr Willis says Hey listen to me having a learning disability does not mean that you are not smart it just means that you learn differently... See, you just need to be more resilient okay. So, take one of those and take these spelling notecards

Dana says Thanks and she leaves class Dana spells Conquer C-O-N-Q-E-U-R wrong Again! This is so hard and she dashes to Natalie says HEY! Dana says oh my gosh I'm so sorry Natalie says watch where you're going wait don't tell me you're actually thinking about entering the spelling bee Dana says yeah I'm practising for it... Why? Natalie says can you even spell practice? Are you gonna get your I's and your E's mixed up again get real you're not smart enough to win Dana says Well, Mr Willis says that just because I learn differently doesn't mean I'm not smart Natalie says He's just being nice, dyslexic Dana these cards just can't save you anything can she throws Dana cards down and pour water on the cards and Natalie leaves Dana says No my note cards I can't believe it... They're ruined Mr Wilson comes out of his classroom And see's Dana crying Mr Willis says what happened? Dana says I should have never tried to enter the spelling bee. I'll never be smart enough to win Wilson says hey don't say that. You can still win Dana says yeah? How would you know? You don't know what it's like to have dyslexia Mr Wilson says actually, I know pretty well what it's like to have dyslexia because I've been struggling with it my whole life. Dana says what? You have? Mr Willis says Yes but I don't let it stop me. Did you know I actually won the spelling bee? 20 years ago Mr Willis shows a photo and says that's me on the night I won my English teacher believed in me I didn't think I was smart enough to win but she taught me the exact thing that I am trying to teach you having a learning disability does not mean that you are not smart it just means that you learn differently Dana says oh my gosh... Mr Willis says spell conquer before you spell it, just sound it out slowly start tapping find a rhythm and say each letter slowly. We will see if this works C-O Dana says Conquer and she starts tapping C-O N- Q- U- E- R Conquer

Mr Willis says Yes! Dana, that's called finger tap spelling you are so smart. You just learn differently Okay come on let's keep going with Mr Willis helping Dana, she now starts to discover new ways of learning that work for her she learns to tap while spelling out loud the beat helps her put the letters in proper order she practices spelling while jumping rope she finds the rhythm helps her learn faster she discovers all these new learning tools to help her overcome her dyslexia. Dana was spelling words she never even thought would be possible and then came the day of the spelling bee Dana gets asked a lot of challenging words and each time. Spells them correctly she keeps moving up the ranks and beating one opponent after the next she makes it all the way to the last round only to face off against Natalie. Mr Willis says and now, for the final round of the Hawkins middle school annual beehive spelling bee... Natalie your word is... intelligence. Natalie says intelligence. That's so easy you might as well just give me the trophy I-N-T-E-L-I-G-E-N-C-E. And everyone in the class Gasps Mr Willis says that's is incorrect intelligence has two L's. Natalie says No no no that was an accident! I wanna try again! Mr Willis says No, I'm sorry. Rules are rules Dana if you can spell this next word correctly... You win the trophy and that word is resilience Dana says Okay R-E-S-I-L-I-E-N-C-E. Mr Willis says and that is correct. And everybody in class claps and the winner of beehive 2021 is. Then Natalie says that's not fair how can someone with dyslexia beat me? You're obviously not smart enough. Dana says well I didn't think I was smart enough either but then someone reminded me that just because you have a learning disability doesn't mean you're not smart it just means you learn differently Natalie says whatever and leaves class and everyone in the class claps.

Having a learning disability doesn't mean you're not smart. It just means you learn differently
