Just Because Of A......

It was a beautiful evening of Saturday, the sun was going down at a much slower rate than expected, the street lights weren’t glowing yet when the people sitting in the basement of The City Hospital saw red and blue lights in the air approaching towards them. The people sitting there began gossiping with each other. One said, “They might be here for the girl that came here this morning”. Another said, “Well they are only 9hrs late; I was expecting at least 12!!”. After a pause, he again said “I don’t think that girl’s gonna survive, she was seriously injured”. While the people were busy in their gossips the Police Jeep stopped at the front gate of the hospital. A Police Inspector with 2 lady constables walked into the hospital. As soon as they reached the reception desk, a doctor came running towards them. Although he was panting, in a weak voice he said “I’m the Doctor of Pari Gupta and Ayan Qureshi’s case”. The Inspector said in a serious voice “Will they survive Doctor?” The Doctor thought for a while and then he said: “Both the patients have serious injuries, I can’t say anything right now”. “Where are they?” The Inspector said. The doctor pointed towards the corridor and said “I’ve kept both of them in the same I.C.U you may ask them a few questions if you want”. Both the Inspector and the Doctor went into the I.C.U. The doctor said, “You can ask your questions to the girl, the kid has been unconscious since the time he came here”. The Policeman nodded and sat on the stool near Pari. In a low voice he said, “Hello Miss Pari, I need to ask you a few questions”. Pari didn’t respond. The Inspector asked again “Hello Miss Pari, Can you hear me?” This time Pari said yes in a whispering voice which gave the idea of how much pain she was feeling right now. The Inspector again said “Miss Pari, I went through the CCTV footage, earlier you were sitting with this boy at the tea stall, Am I right? “ Pari simply nodded a little this time. The Inspector paused for a while, then he instructed one of his constables to write down the conversation in a diary, then he again said “Do you know this boy personally?” Pari said “No….., This boy works at the tea stall, I just asked him to have some biscuit and tea with me “. The Inspector murmured something to his constable and again asked “ Why did you go into the temple, and why did the crowd went angry on you? “ Pari answered, “ I saw a little girl who went too close to a manhole and was peeking into it, I feared that the girl may fall into the manhole, so I ran there to save her, I looked for her parents, then

I thought they might be there in the Temple”. After saying this Pari again went unconscious. The Doctor immediately took charge and asked the Inspector to leave until the situation subsidizes. After about an hour the Doctor again allowed the Inspector to carry on with their questionnaire. The Inspector asked Pari “ So Miss Pari could you tell about the cause of your injuries? “ Pari said “ As I went into the temple, there was a “Yagya” going on, I crossed the place and went near the stairs when suddenly the girl saw her parents and ran towards them, and I started returning to the tea stall”. The Police Inspector said, “ Miss Pari you didn’t explain why did the crowd get angry on you”. Pari coughed a little and then continued “ As I was returning, a man shouted ‘ Hey you, stop right there, what are those stains on your clothes’ They saw the bloodstains on my clothes”.

The Inspector asked,” Bloodstains, where did they come from? “. Pari said, “ I’m on my period's sir, they were talking about those bloodstains.” The Inspector moved his stool a little backward. Pari smiled and said, “ Just like you, those people also thought of me as an impure and degraded body and ran towards me, they thought I was there to demolish their purity and tear down the sacredness of the Yagya .” The Inspector knew his mistake and again pulled his stool where he was sitting a minute ago. The inspector asked, “ And why was this boy injured ? “. Pari again smiled and said, “ Ayan thought I accidentally left my packet, he ran towards me to return it, as he was running by the time he reached the temple the plastic tore and the thing inside it fell in front of everyone, this sparked the anger of the people there and they started hitting both of us”. The Inspector confusingly asked “ What was inside that plastic, was it some kind of meat or something else? “ Pari’s smile hasn’t faded away yet, she coughed twice and then said in a low voice “ A Sanitary Pad Inspector”. The Inspector asked “ Just because of a sanitary pad? “ Pari said, “ Just because of a………….”. She was about to complete her sentence when the machine at the side of the bed started beeping continuously. Her hand was getting cold, she was struggling to breathe. In the very next moment, her heart rate was falling continuously and then the heart rate monitor showed her last pulse and went flatline. Everyone else standing in the I.C.U had no expressions on their faces except for Pari who had a beautiful satisfying smile on her face as if she was happy while leaving this world.
