Junk Words
Junk Words
Junk Words
Written by Sunil Algama, Sri Lanka
Poisonous, poisonous—almost poisonous,
Sometimes.
Deadliest on many occasions.
Worst of all, no precaution is taken
Against junk words.
Cultures develop, economies grow—junk words spread.
What is the outcome?
Civilization declines, ethics fade.
Moreover, depressive minds multiply.
Ultimately, death rates rise.
A menace to existence—health breakdown.
The selfishness of the business world markets junk food,
Leading to an unstable world.
Yet, people can be educated, they can prevent harm.
Unfortunately, junk words strike without warning—no prevention.
They pierce not only the mind
But destroy the body as well.

Writer’s Note
I wrote Junk Words as a reflection on the unseen dangers of careless speech. Just as unhealthy food weakens the body, reckless words corrupt the mind and society, leading to irreversible consequences. While people can take action against physical threats, words—once spoken—can spread uncontrollably, leaving destruction in their wake. This poem serves as a reminder that language, when misused, can be just as harmful as any other toxin.
